Women's Track Team Capture's Second Consecutive Team Title

Joplin, Mo. - The University of Tulsa women's track team scored 84 points on Saturday to secure its second consecutive meet title at the Baymount Inn/Fazoli's Open Invitational in Joplin, Mo. On the men's side, TU finished fourth, out of 15 teams, in the team race with 63 points. Seventeen teams took part in the women's meet.

Junior Shana Robinson won her third consecutive meet in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.44. She also posted the top time in the preliminaries. With a time of 24.85, Robinson placed second in the 200-meter dash. Junior Karlisha Atkins finished fifth in the 200-meters, also scoring team points for the Golden Hurricane.

Senior Jamese James won the 600-yard run with a time of 1:22.44, just over two seconds ahead of sophomore Chatney Noble's time of 1:24.67. Fellow sophomore Melanie Hardy finished third in the 600-meters as well. James also finished second in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.77. Junior Suzane Smith placed third in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.05.

Sophomores Paula Richardson and Alisha Burnett finished third and fourth, respectively, in the 400-meter dash. Richardson posted a time of 57.11, beating Burnett's time of 57.20 by :00.09. Freshman Megan Lagwell posted a time of 2:22.28 in the 800-meter run for a fifth-place finish.

Both of Tulsa's 4x400-meter relay teams finished in the top-four, as the "A" team won the event in a time of 3:47.66. The "B" team placed fourth with a time of 4:02.57 to close out the team's scoring.

The Hurricane men also crowned a pair of individual champions to go along with 10 top-five finishes. Senior Branon Vaughan won the 600-yard run with a time of 1:13.27. Fellow senior Derek Sparks finished second in the 600-yard with a time of 1:13.55. Freshman Clif Mitchell finished third with a time of 1:13.59, while sophomore Justin Rempel finished fifth with a time of 1:14.49.

Tulsa made it a clean sweep in the 4x400-meter relay as the men's "A" team won the event with a time of 3:19.50.

Junior Romby Bryant finished fifth in the finals of the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.99. He recorded the third best time in preliminary action with a 6.97 time. Fellow junior Owain Matthews finished second in the mile run with a time of 4:14.65. Freshman Andrew McKenna placed fourth in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 8:40.55, while fellow freshman Devonne Harrison also placed fourth in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.38. Harrison posted the second best qualifying time in the preliminaries with a time of 8.32.

To close out the scoring, junior Jason Krueger placed fourth in the high jump with a leap of 1.99m (6'6.25").
