Five Hurricane Harriers Earn Spots on Academic All-District Teams

Senior April Johnson highlighted a list of five Hurricane runners to earn a spot on the Verizon Academic All-District VI team.

Tulsa, Okla. - Both of the track teams at The University of Tulsa had members selected to the Verizon Academic All-District VI teams as announced on Thursday. Senior April Johnson highlighted three TU runners earning first-team honors, including sophomore Blake Carpenter and junior Ben Orozco. Senior Sarah Haskins and junior Shana Robinson also earned second-team all-district honors.

A native of Fayetteville, Ark., Johnson competed in four cross country meets for the Golden Hurricane this season. She posted two top-25 finishes, including helping the team to a second-place finish at the WAC Cross Country Championships. Johnson has been a member of the President's and Athletic Director's Honor Roll all eight semesters, with a 4.00 grade point average. She was a member of the TU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and won TU's "Warren Garrison Academic Excellence Award" for having the highest GPA of any TU senior student-athlete. She has earned all-WAC Academic honors four for cross country and three times for track field.

Carpenter, from Baytown, Texas, has a 3.94 grade point average in electrical engineering. Competing in the 800m, 1500m and 3000m for both indoor and outdoor track, Carpenter posted an indoor season best time of 1:59.05 in the 800m at the Sooner Inv. He has also recorded a season-best time of 4:31.70 at the WAC Indoor Championships in the 1500m, after he posted a personal-best time of 2:33.67 in the 1,000m at the Holiday Inn Invitational. During the outdoor season, Carpenter competed in the 800m, mile run, 1,500m. He ran the second best time on the squad for the 1,500m with 3:57.59 at the UALR Open. He recorded a time of 1:58.88 at the UTA Invitational in the 800m, after he posted a time of 8:59.48 in the 3,000m at UALR. Carpenter has been on Dean's List six semesters and the Athletic Director's Honor Roll six semesters.

Having competed in all seven cross country meets this season, Orozco recorded three top-10 finishes. The Kanapolis, Kan., native also earned second-team All-WAC honors with a 10th place finish at the WAC Cross Country Championships. During the indoor track season, he recorded a season-best time of 4:25.44 in the indoor mile run, 8:50.98 in the 3,000m and 15:51.41 in the 5,000m. Orozco won the outdoor 1,500m at the SMS/Queen City Inv. with a 4:00.16 mark. He owned the squad's second best times for the outdoor 3,000m (8:46.47) and the 5,000m (15:08.99). He has been a member of the Dean's List all six semesters as well as the Athletic Director's Honor Roll. He has also earned all-WAC Academic honors twice for cross country and twice for track and field. The pre-med major has a 3.95 grade point average.

A native of Tulsa, Okla., and Central High School product, Robinson proved she was not only one of the fastest women in the country but one of the smartest too. She won the indoor 60-meters three times this season and the indoor 200-meters once. She broke her own school record in the 60m with an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 7.38. She also competed on the 4x440-yard relay. Robinson Robinson currently owns the fourth fastest time in the country for the 200m and the 14th fastest time for the 100m. She was also a member of the sprint medley relay that won the Drake Relays and member of the 4x200m team that finished second at Drake Relays. She has been a member of the President's Honor Roll for two semesters and on the Dean's List for six semesters. She has also been on the Athletic Director's Honor Roll for six semesters. Robinson owns three individual indoor school records; two indivdual outdoor school records and has been a part of three school record relay teams. She has earned All-WAC Academic honors for track for the past three seasons, as well, with a 3.67 GPA in exercise science.

Haskins, from Ballwin, Mo., competed in seven cross country meets this season, with four top-10 finishes. She earned second-team All-WAC honors with a 10th place finish at the WAC Cross Country Championships. She also finished third at the WAC Indoor Championships for the 3,000m and seventh in the 5,000m this season. Haskins also competed in the indoor mile and the distance medley relay team. During the outdoor season, she won the 1500m at the SMS/Queen City Invitational. She owns TU's top times for the 3,000m; 5,000m and 10,000m Haskins has been on the Dean's List for all eight semesters as well as the Athletic Director's Honor Roll. With a 3.85 GPA in elementary education, she has earned all-WAC Academic honors four times in cross country and four times in track. In addition to volunteering at a local elementary school, she is a member of the TU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.
