Tulsa, Oklahoma - The Tulsa football team had its first two-a-day workout of preseason camp on Monday. The Hurricane went nearly two hours in the morning, and returned in the evening with a 1:45 practice on the turf at Skelly Stadium.

The Hurricane practiced at Owasso High School in the morning to preserve the Harwell grass fields with the recent rain, and the recent painting of the Skelly Stadium turf prevented a morning workout on campus. However, the Hurricane was able to have its late practice in the stadium.

Tulsa Head Coach Steve Kragthorpe was pleased with the first day of two practice sessions.

"We had two good practices. I thought our tempo was excellent. The weather cooperated -- it was nice and cool. I was really pleased with the effort," said Kragthorpe. "We're starting to see some good things execution-wise. The most pleasing thing is that we haven't had to take five practices to get back to where we were at the end of 15 practices in the spring. We've continued right on from where we left off in the spring. There hasn't been a lot of re-learning that's been necessary."

Despite not reporting for practice before the varsity players returned as has been the case in previous years, the newcomers are fitting in well.

"Our young guys are starting to see where the pieces of the puzzle are fitting together, and so they're playing with a little more speed, whereas before they were paralyzing their body a little bit with their mind," said Kragthorpe. "They're starting to make some plays now and are playing with more speed as things start to become more familiar to them and as they become more comfortable with everything."

Kragthorpe is excited about the increased speed and athletic ability on the field.

"We have a lot more speed than we saw in the spring. For two reasons, I think our veteran players had a great summer conditioning program, and we have some guys from our recruiting class who can run," added Kragthorpe.

Tulsa will be back on the practice field for one workout on Tuesday.
