Tulsa, Oklahoma - The University of Tulsa men's and women's soccer teams reported and went through their first practices of the season today in preparation for the 2003 campaign.

A total of 20 players reported for the TU women's preseason camp this morning. The team went through fitness testing this morning and then played an intrasquad scrimmage consisting of two 30-minute halves.

"I'm very happy with the fitness of our team," TU fifth-year Head Coach Damon Gore said. "We reported on Tuesday and went through physicals, issued equipment and had team orientation meetings.

The team is in good condition and very fit. Today, we went through our 'Beep' test, which is an intermittent recovery test that gives us a good idea of whether we're in soccer shape or not. All of our freshmen passed the test, which is the first time we've had that happen in my six years at Tulsa."

"The intrasquad scrimmage was highlighted by some great goals and I thought the players were very motivated and excited," Gore added.

Beginning today, the Golden Hurricane women's team will alternate two-a-day practices with single session practices every other day until Aug. 23. The two-a-day practices will begin at 10 a.m. and end at 12 noon with the evening practices running from 8-10 p.m. The single day practices will be in the afternoons from 3-5 p.m.

The Tulsa men's team also reported Tuesday and held their first practice today. The men's camp included 26 players. The team received physical exams and had team meetings on Tuesday. Today, Tulsa began two-a-day practices, which will run through August 22. The Golden Hurricane players began the morning with a variety of fitness testing and concluded the evening practice with the implementation of different schemes.

"The fitness tests went very well," ninth-year Head Coach Tom McIntosh said. "We had 22 of our 24 players pass the 'beep' test and 20 out of 24 players passed the 'Cooper' test (two miles in 12 minutes), which is the best effort in history of our men's soccer program."

" I'm very pleased with our first day of practice. During the evening practice, we jumped right into installing our new system and teaching the players the different aspects. I thought they showed lots of energy and picked up the new concepts very quickly," McIntosh added.

The TU men's two-a-day practice schedule will alternate. On Thursday, the Hurricane will practice in the morning from 10 a.m. to 12 noon and again in the evening from 7:30-9:30 p.m. This Friday, the first practice will run from 8-10 a.m. with the second practice from 3-5 p.m.
