Tulsa, Okla. - University of Tulsa Director of Athletics Judy MacLeod announced today the "Tulsa Helping Tulsans" campaign for the home football opener against Southwest Texas State (the official school name will change to Texas State @ San Marcos on Sept. 1, 2003). MacLeod made the announcement with Head Football Coach Steve Kragthorpe at a Monday news conference.
Football fans in northeastern Oklahoma will be treated to a major college football experience for just $1.00 per ticket when the Tulsa Golden Hurricane returns home from two road games to open the home season on Sept. 13 against Southwest Texas State.
"It's been a tough time economically for Tulsa and the northeastern Oklahoma area recently, and we wanted the opportunity to show people that we not only play exciting football but that we care about them and our community," said MacLeod. "This campaign 'Tulsa Helping Tulsans' is just a small way of showing our appreciation to a community that has given us so much."
With an expected near capacity crowd at Skelly Stadium (capacity of 40,385), MacLeod stressed that it's a win-win situation for both TU and the community. "Obviously, it's great for our football team to play in front of a full stadium of our own fans. We would hope that the game will give Tulsans an opportunity for exciting family fun at an affordable price," added MacLeod.
"The cost to put on a game with a near capacity crowd will put quite a strain on our budget, but 'Tulsa Helping Tulsans' is very important to us," said MacLeod. "Our costs will be similar to that of the Oklahoma game last year, but the revenue from it will be far less. However, we still believe this is important for our community. We live here too. We see how hard it's been on some of our neighbors. Although it doesn't solve the economic woes, it offers an inexpensive night out."
"This community has been so good to me, my family and our coaches in the nine months that we've been here. This campaign is just one small way of showing our appreciation. Not to mention, it would be great for our kids to run out of that tunnel in front of 40,000 fans," said Kragthorpe.
MacLeod also explained that TU football season ticket holders have received a coupon for two free tickets to any game this year. "We wanted to do this campaign, but we didn't want to slight our most ardent supporters who purchase season tickets, therefore, we have provided them with the opportunity of getting extra tickets to any game this year. I believe they will understand and will be supportive of our campaign."
Tickets for all Tulsa home games are now on sale. The TU athletic ticket office hours are 8:30-5:30 p.m. Monday-Friday. Fans can purchase tickets by calling the ticket office at 918-631-GoTU (4688) or online at www.tulsahurricane.com. Fans can also stop by the athletic ticket office at the Donald W. Reynolds Center.
