Tulsa Track Teams Impressive in First Home Event on Saturday

Tulsa, Okla. - The javelin was the first event to open the new Hurricane Soccer and Track Stadium at The University of Tulsa on Saturday. The Tulsa Duels marked the first track event hosted on the TU campus.

In duel scoring, Tulsa captured a 75-33 win over Oklahoma State and a 66-31 victory against Oral Roberts in women's action. For the men, Tulsa defeated Oklahoma State 52-26 and Oral Roberts 57-41.

The Tulsa women claimed nine first-place performances, while the men's track team finished in first-place in four events.

Tulsa freshman Ashley Ast became the first Tulsa female athlete in school history to throw the javelin in an outdoor event. She won the event with a throw of 40.17 meters.

In running events, Tulsa women had two double winners, as senior Shana Robinson claimed victories in the 100 and 200 meters, while junior Melanie Hardy claimed wins in both the 800 and 1,500 meters.

Hardy clocked the winning time of 4:42.99 in the 1,500 meters, and came back less than an hour later and won the 800 meters with a time of 2:16.28.

In the 100-meter dash, Tulsa claimed the first four places with Robinson tying her own school record that she first established a year ago with a time of 11:35 today. Finishing behind Robinson was freshman Chantelle Willard (11.91), junior Mary Carr (12.06) and freshman Krystol Lartey (12.08).

Robinson's 200-meter time of 23.69 is her second-best career time and the second-best in school history. Juniors Paula Richardson and Mary Carr clocked times of 24.60 and 24.70 for second and third-place in the 200 meters.

Junior Natalie Rasmussen won the 3,000-meter run with a time of 10:31.58. Senior Suzanne Smith-Hogg had a winning time of 69.53 in the 400-meter hurdles.

Sophomore Shameka Holloway finished in second place with a time of 56.39 in the 400 meters, followed by junior Michelle Rodgers with a time of 58.51.

In the women's long jump, freshman Margaret Glover posted a jump of 5.28 meters for second-place.

In the relay events, the Tulsa women's 4x100 and 4x400 meter relay teams captured victories. The 4x100 relay team clocked a winning time of 45.98 for the fifth-best time in school history, while the 4x400 meter team finished the course in a time of 3:50.92.

For the men, freshman Cory Ray clocked the fifth-best outdoor time in school history with a time of 10.52 in the 100 meters to finish in first-place, while he claimed second-place in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.51.

In the men's javelin, Tulsa freshman Jacob Chavez had a winning throw and the third-best in school history with a throw of 51.34.

In the 400-meter intermediate hurdles, junior Jamal Bogle and freshman Rickey Wilson finished one-two with times of 56.75 and 58.37. In the 110-meter hurdles, Tulsa's Wilson and Bogle placed second and third with times of 14.77 and 15.09. Tulsa freshman Jason Schweitzer had a winning time of 9:05.30 in the 3,000 meters.

Hurricane senior Owain Matthews finished in fourth place with a time of 3:57.91 in the 1,500 meters. Sophomore Tony Kay placed fourth in the 400m for the men with a time of 50.96.

In the men's 800 meters, Tulsa sophomore Clif Mitchell finished in third-place in a time of 1:57.96.

In other duel scoring, the Oral Roberts women defeated Oklahoma State 66-43, while the ORU men also defeated Oklahoma State 47-32.
