Tulsa Women Dominate Hurricane Invitational

Tulsa senior Shana Robinson claimed victories in both the 100 and 200 meters and also ran the anchor leg for the winning 4x100 relay team.

Tulsa, Oklahoma - The University of Tulsa women dominated the Hurricane Invitational at the new Hurricane Soccer and Track Stadium on Saturday.

The Tulsa women claimed eight first-place performances, while the men's track team placed second in five events.

The Hurricane women began their collection of gold medals with first-place in the 4x100-meter relay. Tulsa established a new school record with a time of 45.36, as senior Shana Robinson anchored the record-setting performance. Freshman Chantelle Willard, sophomore Shameka Holloway and junior Paula Richardson ran the first three legs of the race.

The Tulsa women claimed victories in the 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m and 5,000-meter run.

In addition to running the anchor leg on the 4x100-meter relay, Robinson captured victories in the 100 and 200-meters. She clocked a time of 11.51, and later won the 200-meters with a time of 23.90. In addition, Tulsa freshman Krystol Lartey placed fourth in the 100m, and Willard clocked a fourth-place time of 24.73 in the 200-meters.

Robinson's two wins mark the third outdoor meet this year that she has swept both the 100 and 200 meters.

Richardson turned in a time of 54.83 for first place in the 400-meters, while senior Chatney Noble placed third with a time of 55.05. Junior Melanie Hardy clocked a winning time of 2:11.65 in the 800-meters, while junior Natalie Rasmussen captured victory in the 5,000m with a time of 18:04.81.

The Hurricane women claimed one win in the field events as freshman Ashley Ast captured her third victory of the season with a throw of 140-04 in the javelin.

Just as the Hurricane women began the day with a relay victory, the Tulsa women captured a win in the final race of the day, the 4x400 relay. Tulsa clocked a season-best time of 3:39.64 behind the running of Noble, Richardson, Hardy and Willard.

Other top performances for the Hurricane included sophomore Brie Penaluna and freshman Margaret Glover placing third and fourth, respectively, in the long jump. Penaluna jumped 18-08, while Glover had a jump of 18-07.

Senior Suzanne Smith-Hogg clocked a time of 15:39 to finish in third-place in the 100-meter hurdles.

The Hurricane men turned in five second-place performances on the day, including three runners-up finishes on the track and twice placing among the top-two in field events.

In the running events, freshman Cory Ray claimed second-place in the 100-meters with a time of 10.70. Junior Justin Rempel placed second in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 3:51.58, while senior Ben Orozco clocked a fifth-place time of 3:55.80 in that event.

In addition, freshman Jason Schweitzer clocked a second-place performance in the 5,000 meters with a time of 15:06.55, while sophomore Taylor Williams finished in third-place in a time of 15:18.65, and freshman Andrew Beard placed fourth with a time of 15:31.37.

Two-sport athletes, freshman Charles Ramsdell and senior Antwan Floyd, turned in second-place performances in their respective field events. Ramsdell, a basketball athlete, placed second in the high jump, clearing 6-08. In the shot put, Floyd, a football athlete, placed second with a throw of 43-05.25.

Junior Jamal Bogle finished in third-place in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.94. Freshman Jacob Chavez had a throw of 156-02 to place fifth in the javelin.

The Hurricane will compete next week, April 30, at the Cardinal Invitational in Palo Alto, California. The Western Athletic Conference Championships will take place May 12-15, on the campus of Rice University in Houston, Texas.
