April 29, 2004

Tulsa, Oklahoma - University of Tulsa senior David Inglis will be looking to capture his fourth straight Western Athletic Conference individual title at the 2004 WAC Championships, Monday-Wednesday, May 3-5. As a team, the Hurricane will be after a second WAC title in the last three seasons.

Tulsa joins SMU, host Fresno State and UTEP as the favorites to capture the WAC Golf title at the San Joaquin Country Club in Fresno, California. Individually, Inglis will get strong competition from the nation's ninth-ranked golfer according to Golfstat, Chris Baryla of UTEP, as well as Hawaii's Matt Kodama and Boise State's Graham DeLaet, all ranked among the nation's top-50 golfers.

A year ago, Inglis became the only golfer in conference history to win a third consecutive league title, but the team fell three strokes shy of pulling off its second straight conference championship and finished in second place.

Tulsa carded rounds of 289-287-289 for a one-over par 865 score, just three strokes behind tournament winner Fresno State. The Hurricane entered the final day five strokes behind FSU, but could only make up two strokes.

As for Inglis, the Hurricane junior carded rounds of 68-69-71 for an eight-under 208 total as he led from start to finish. However, Inglis needed a three-hole playoff to defeat Fresno State's Nick Watney.

The battle for the individual championship between Inglis and Watney, the league's top two players, lived up to pre-tournament expectations. The duo matched strokes for the final seven holes to tie for the lead with identical eight-under par 208s.

The tie-breaker for the individual title played The Houstonian's 464-yard, par-4, 18th hole until the deadlock was broken. The pair twice matched par scores, but on the third playoff of the same hole Watney hit his drive into a right-side bunker and then took another two shots before reaching the green. Inglis reached the green in two and safely two-putted to win the hole 4-5.

In his sophomore season, Inglis shot a WAC record 18-under par score of 198 with rounds of 63-66-69 to win the WAC crown. The Hurricane won the team title in 2002 as well.

After the WAC Championships, Tulsa will play at The Maxwell, May 15-16, in Ardmore, Oklahoma.
