Tulsa's Kragthorpe Signs Contract Extension

Tulsa's Steve Kragthorpe led the Golden Hurricane to the school's first winning season and bowl game appearance in 12 years during his first season as the Hurricane head coach.

Tulsa, Oklahoma - University of Tulsa Head Football Coach Steve Kragthorpe signed a contract extension that now runs through the 2008 season, it was announced today.

During the 2003 season, Kragthorpe led the Golden Hurricane to the school's first winning season and bowl game appearance in 12 years. He led Tulsa to an 8-5 mark, a second-place league finish with a 6-2 record and an appearance in the Humanitarian Bowl in his first year at the helm of the Tulsa program. Tulsa had the biggest turnaround in Division I-A in the 2003 season, winning seven more games than the previous year.

"Our administration at The University of Tulsa is very committed to helping us establish a football program that can compete at the highest level. This contract extension is further evidence of that fact," said Kragthorpe. "This action speaks very loudly in terms of the direction we want to go with our football program at The University of Tulsa."

Kragthorpe was named the Western Athletic Conference Coach of the Year and was also a candidate for numerous national coach of the year awards. He was the recipient of the FWAA/Scripps First-Year Coach of the Year Award as presented by the Football Writer's Association of America.

He also placed third in the Associated Press National Coach of the Year balloting. Kragthorpe was a finalist for the Eddie Robinson National Coach of the Year award, the Paul "Bear" Bryant College Football Coach of the Year honor and the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year award.

Kragthorpe was named Tulsa's head football coach on December 18, 2002. He came to Tulsa following two years as the quarterback coach with the Buffalo Bills.

Terms of the contract were not disclosed.
