Hurricane Harriers Set Sights on WAC Championships

Senior Shana Robinson will look to defend her 100m and 200m conference titles at the 2004 WAC Outdoor Championships in Houston, Texas.

Tulsa, Okla. - Senior Shana Robinson is one of four runners for The University of Tulsa listed among the top three for their respective event heading into the Western Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The meet is being hosted by Rice University in Houston, Texas with the field and running events starting Friday, May 14, and continuing on Saturday, May 15.

Robinson, a sprinter from Tulsa, Okla., leads the WAC in the 100-meters and 200-meters. She is regionally qualified for both events, including the eighth best time in the country for the 100-meters. The Central HS product is also a member of the women's 4x100-meter relay team that ranks third in the league.

During the indoor season, Robinson won the 60-meters and 200-meters in route to winning the meet's High Point Award. She was also named the meet's Most Outstanding Runner.

Junior Melanie Hardy ranks third in the women's 800-meters in the WAC with a regionally qualified time of 2:08.79. The Jamaica, N.Y. native won the event at the Bill Williams Invitational to become the Hurricane's third individual to qualify for regionals.

The women's 4x100-meter relay team is also regionally qualified with the WAC's third best time, as is the women's 4x400-meter relay team. Freshman Chantelle Willard, sophomore Shameka Holloway, junior Paula Richardson and Robinson make up the 4x100m squad that also won the Hurricane Invitational. The 4x400m relay team is comprised of senior Chatney Noble, Richardson, Hardy and Willard. The 1,600-meter relay also won the Hurricane Invitational by nearly five seconds.

On the men's side, junior Justin Rempel clocked the WAC's second best time for the 1,500-meters with a mark of 3:45.86 at the Cardinal Invitational. Senior Owain Matthews also ranks among the top three in an event, with the third best time for the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Matthews also ranks fourth in the Midwest region with his time of 8:55.44 in the event.

Last season, Tulsa crowned three champions. Robinson won both the 100-meters and 200-meters while junior Jamal Bogle won the men's 110-meter hurdles. The Hurricane women finished fifth overall with 87 points. The Hurricane men finished sixth with a total of 72 points.

Following the conference meet, the Golden Hurricane will travel to College Station, Texas for the NCAA Regional. Hosted by Texas A&M, the regional will be held Friday-Saturday, May 28-29.
