Matthews Finishes Second in Steeplechase at WAC Championships

Junior Jamal Bogle will look to defend his 110-meter hurdle conference title on Saturday, as he qualified for the finale in both the 110-meter and 400-meter hurldes at the WAC Outdoor championships.

Houston, Texas - The University of Tulsa track teams advanced 14 runners in 17 events to the finals at the 2004 WAC Outdoor Championships hosted by Rice in Houston, Texas. After the first day of individual events, the TU men stand in seventh place with 14 points, while the TU women are in eighth with eight points.

Senior Shana Robinson leads a contention of three TU runners that have qualified for two event finals. She posted the top preliminary time for the 100-meters and the third best prelim time for the 200-meters. Fellow senior Suzanne Smith-Hogg also qualified in two events, the 100-meter hurdles and the 400-meter hurdles. One the men's side, junior Jamal Bogle will look to defend his 110-meter hurdle championships from last year, as well as look to win the 400-meter hurdles.

In events that went straight to finals, senior Owain Matthews was TU's top finisher with a second place finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in a time of 9:07.27. Junior Natalie Rassmussen finished fourth in the women's 10,000-meters with a time of 36:37.67.

In the men's 10,000-meters, a trio of TU freshman finishised in the top-10. Jason Schweitzer finished sixth with a time of 31:52.28, just ahead of Adrew Beard's time of 32:01.42. Taylor Williams finished ninth in the race with a mark of 33:05.91.

Another pair of freshmen scored points for the Golden Hurricane in two field events. Margaret Glover finished sixth in the women's long jump with a leap of 5.90m (19'4.25"). Jacob Chavez finished seventh in the men's javelin with a throw of 51.11m (167'8")

The meet will conclude on Saturday with seven more field events and the finals of 20 running events. The Golden Hurricane will have two weeks of before heading to the NCAA Regional at College Station, Texas, on May 28-29.
