Hardy Wins 800-meters at Midwest Regional

Junior Melanie Hardy won the 800-meters at the Midwest Regional on Saturday to automatically qualify for the NCAA Outdoor National Championships.

College Station, Texas - Junior Melanie Hardy became the first Golden Hurricane to win a regional title with a win the women's 800-meters with a time of 2:07.01. She automatically qualifies for the NCAA Outdoor Championships held in Austin, Texas on June 9-12. Senior Shana Robinson also qualified for the NCAA championships with a third place finish in the 100-meters.

Robinson broke her own school record with a time of 11.23 in the 100-meter finale. Earlier this season she posted the country's eighth best time with a mark of 11.35.

The women's 4x400-meter relay team also added to TU's final point total with a fifth place finish. The team of senior Chatney Noble, junior Paula Richardson, sophomore Shameka Holloway and freshman Chantelle Willard posted a mark of 3:41.09.

Freshman Ashley Ast posted a 38.04m (124'10") mark in the javelin, while Noble posted a 56.18 mark in the preliminaries of the 400-meters.

As a team the Hurricane women finished tied for 12th at the regional with 20 points.

On the men's side, senior Owain Matthews posted a time of 9:33.08 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase to finish 13th overall. Junior Justin Rempel finished 12th in the 1,500-meters after posting a time of 3:51.08 in the preliminaries. Freshman Charles Ramsdell finished 15th in the high jump with a leap of 2.06m (6'9")
