Chardon, Ohio - The Tulsa men's golf team looks to qualify for the NCAA Championships for the second straight year as the golfers open play in the NCAA Central Regional on Thursday. The 54-hole tournament takes place, Thursday-Saturday, May 18-20.
The tournament takes place at the Sand Ridge Golf Club in Chardon, Ohio, a suburb of Cleveland. Tulsa received the eighth-seed in the 27-team Central Region.
The top-10 seeds are Oklahoma State, Georgia Tech, Texas A&M, Clemson, Duke, Texas, Kentucky, Tulsa, Northwestern and Minnesota.
Since the regional format was adopted in 1989, Tulsa has advanced to the NCAA Championships three times -- 1995, 2002 and 2005. Tulsa's best regional finish was third-place in the 2002 regional at the Pleasant Valley Country Club in Little Rock, Arkansas. Tulsa finished in fifth place in the Central Region in 1995 and placed fourth last year.
The Hurricane has a quartet of junior golfers leading the squad, led by Sam Korbe (Springdale, Ark.) with a team-leading 72.2 stroke average, followed closely by Mitch Cohlmia's (Jenks, Okla.) 72.3 average. Ryan Henry (Broken Arrow, Okla.) has a 72.6 stroke average and Brett Myers (Tulsa, Okla./Union HS) is tied with freshman Nicolas Geyger (Santiago, Chile) with a 73.2 average.
Henry had Tulsa's top performance at last year's NCAA Central Regional with a three-over par 213 for 14th place.
Three regional tournaments -- East, Central and West -- encompassing the current nine regions, will be conducted May 18-20. A total of 27 teams and six individuals not on selected teams were assigned to each regional site. Ten teams and two individuals not on advancing teams will move on from each regional to the championship finals.
The NCAA Championships will be conducted May 31-June 3 at Crosswater Golf Club at Sunriver Resort in Sunriver, Oregon.
