Tulsa, Oklahoma - The Tulsa Golden Hurricane football team returns to Skelly Stadium for an early Homecoming match-up against the North Texas Mean Green this Saturday, Sept. 16. The game is scheduled for 6:05 pm (CT) at Skelly Stadium (35,542) in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Both teams come into the game with 1-1 records. Last week, Tulsa suffered a 49-24 loss at BYU, while the Mean Green handled TU's fellow Conference USA member SMU 24-6.
This is the 22nd meeting between Tulsa and North Texas. Tulsa holds a 15-6 series advantage and has won the last seven games. The Hurricane claimed a 54-2 victory last year in Denton.
"North Texas is a good football team. They know how to win and they're 1-1 just like we are," said Tulsa Head Coach Steve Kragthorpe.
Kragthorpe discussed North Texas' impressive offense.
"North Texas is a much better football team than they were last year. They're much more dynamic on offense. They're utilizing more formations, more personnel packages, Kragthorpe said. "They've got some good players coming back. Jamario (Thomas) is a heck of a tailback. Johnny's (Quinn) a really good receiver who had multiple catches last week against SMU. Their new quarterback, Woody Wilson, is very, very talented and can make plays. They're certainly going to be a tough test for us defending them because they're doing so many more things on offense. I think Ramon (Flanigan) is doing a nice job with their offense. He's obviously presenting a lot more things that are more difficult to defend than they did last year."
Kragthorpe has also been impressed with the Mean Green defense. "On the defensive side of the ball they are very, very sound," said Kragthorpe. "Freddy Bleil is their new defensive coordinator and he's a very sound football coach. They're not going to give up big play. They're going to make you earn everything. They're going to create turnovers by flying to the ball, and that was really what happened in the SMU game last week."
