Tulsa, Oklahoma - The Tulsa Golden Hurricane football team goes back on the road this week to face the United States Naval Academy on Saturday, September 23. The game is scheduled for 12:30 pm (CT) at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium (34,000) in Annapolis, Md.
Navy is undefeated with a 3-0 record after home wins against East Carolina and Massachusetts and a 37-9 road victory at Stanford last week. Tulsa enters the game with a 2-1 record after last week's 28-3 home win over North Texas.
Navy looks for just their second 4-0 start in the last 26 years. The last time just came two years ago when the Midshipmen won their first five games in 2004.
The game will be televised live nationally on CSTV. CSTV is not available on cable in Tulsa. The only way fans can watch the game locally is on DirecTV (610) and Dish Network (Channel 152).
Tulsa Head Coach Steve Kragthorpe talked about the Midshipmen football team.
"They are very, very disciplined. They play extremely fast and they play extremely hard. They have good talent. They are not a particularly big football team. You are not going to see an offensive line like a BYU who we played a few weeks ago that has 300-pounders across the board, and that's good," said Kragthorpe. "What you are going to see in Navy is a very athletic group of players. They are very good athletes. They can run. They are big and they're physical."
On Navy's offensive attack, Kragthorpe commented, "they are very multiple on the offensive side of the ball. They did an excellent job against us the last time that we played." In 2004, Navy handed Tulsa a 29-0 defeat at Skelly Stadium.
"We know that we have a big challenge on our hands. The hardest part about playing Navy is seeing and trying to simulate the speed of what they do offensively. They are very good at what they do and they are very consistent at what they do," said Kragthorpe. "Their offensive line is very physical and they are going to cut you, chop block you, get you on the ground and try to create situations where they can get the ball on the perimeter without support.
Navy Head Coach Paul Johnson is in his fifth season with the Midshipmen and has posted a 31-21 record, and has an overall 93-31 mark in10 years as a collegiate head coach. The Midshipmen have posted a 16-2 record at home over the last four seasons for a .888. winning percentage.
Watch parties will be held in Tulsa at the Full Moon Café on Cherry Street and Remington's Sports Bar in the Marriott Southern Hills located at 71st and South Lewis Ave. The game can also be heard on Newstalk 740 AM KRMG Radio or online at www.tulsahurricane.com.
