Tulsa Drops Heartbreaker to No. 16 Oklahoma State, 4-3

Federico Soriano gave Tulsa a 3-2 lead, but the Golden Hurricane were unable to hold on, falling 4-3 to Oklahoma State.

Tulsa, Okla. - The University of Tulsa men's tennis team (3-1) fought to a 3-2 lead but were unable to hold on, dropping a heartbreaker to No. 16 Oklahoma State (2-0), 4-3, Sunday night at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.

Tulsa, ranked 27th in the nation, held a 3-2 lead with two matches playing, but No. 90 Ricardo Soriano was unable to hold off OSU's Daniel Byrnes falling 6-2, 3-6, 7-5, leaving the match a 3-3 tie.

TU's Will Gray, ranked No. 34, split the first two sets with the Cowboy's third-ranked Ivan Puchkarov, dropping set one 6-7 (4) before evening the score with a 7-5 win in set two. Gray, however, wasn't able to pull off the upset, with Puchkarov taking the final set 6-4 and clinching the 4-3 win for OSU.

Oklahoma State jumped to a 1-0 lead after winning the doubles point. The Cowboys got a win at the number one doubles as Oleksandr Nedovysov and Daniel Byrnes took an 8-3 decision over TU's eighth-ranked duo of Diego Camacho and Ross Cunningham. OSU clinched the point with Nathan Byrnes and Artie Burmistrau taking The Hurricane's No. 12-ranked team of Arnau Brugues and Federico Soriano by a score of 8-2.

TU fell behind 2-0 when Dmytry Petrov handed Tulsa's Cunningham a 7-5, 6-1 defeat.

The Golden Hurricane evened the score at 2-2 when TU's sixth-ranked Brugues took out Nedovysov 7-5, 6-4, followed by Camacho grabbing a 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 win over Nathan Byrnes.

Tulsa took a 3-2 lead in the match when Federico Soriano bested Burmistrau by a score of 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 at the number four position.

Tulsa will be back in action on January 30 when they host No. 30 Arkansas at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center at 6 p.m.
