Auburn, Ala. - The University of Tulsa softball team split a pair of contests again at the Tiger Invitational in Auburn, Ala. TU dropped a 9-1 decision to host Auburn in six-inning game, prior to defeating Notre Dame 4-2 in its final game of the day.
The Tigers scored first with a run in the first, marking only the third team this season to post the first tally of the game against TU. Tulsa was not able to get much going in the first two innings, as the Golden Hurricane went down in order. Senior Angela Osbon tied the score with a leadoff home run in the third inning, with a shot to left field. After a strikeout, sophomore Stephanie Chomicki recorded TU's second hit of the inning with a single to center field. She would later be called out for leaving early to end the inning.
It did not take Auburn long to regain the lead, as the Tigers hit a one-out home run in the bottom of the third inning for a 2-1 lead. Neither team mounted a threat in the fourth, as TU's Lindsey Tower was the only base runner of the stanza with a single through the right side.
Auburn, however, blew the game open in the fifth inning with four runs taking advantage of three hits, two walks and a TU throwing error. The Tigers finished off the game with three more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning for the run-rule win.
Freshman Jackie Lawrence drew her second loss of the season in the complete game. She struck out three Tigers, but walked eight of them with four of those scoring four runs.
Chomicki went 2-for2 on the contest, while Osbon was 1-for-1 with her homer. Frehsman Lauren Lindsay, junior Sara Dyer and Tower all recorded a hit for Tulsa as well.
In the second game, TU scored first for the sixth time this season. After a scoreless first inning, Notre Dame stranded a pair of runners in scoring position in the top half of the second. Lindsay led off TU's half with a walk. After a fielder's choice took Lindsay out, McGlasson scored TU's first run on a two-out single by senior Lindsay Galloway.
The Irish went down in order in the third, while TU added to its lead. Freshman Vanessa Vice led off with a single to center field, followed by a walk from sophomore Brooke Smart. A one-out double by Dyer scored both Vice and Smart, with Dyer scoring on a throwing error by the UND pitcher to give TU a 4-0 lead.
Notre Dame threatened in the fourth inning, loading the bases on a single, a hit batsman and a walk. Senior Julie Fennell was able to bounce back and strike out the final batter of the inning, however, to end the threat without giving up a run.
Fennell could not keep the shutout in tact in the fifth inning, though, as UND scored twice on back-to-back doubles to start the inning. As has been the trend this season, the Golden Hurricane again had a flare for the dramatic as UND loaded the bases in the seventh inning on a fielding error and two hit batsman. But once again, Fennell was able to bounce back and get the final out to end the threat and preserve the win.
It was Fennell's first win of the season, as she struck out six while scattering five hits and allowing only one earned run. Vice went 2-for-2 with a run scored, while Dyer also posted a pair of hits for the Hurricane.
Tulsa concludes the tournament on Sunday morning with a 10 a.m. contest against Tennessee Tech.
