Tulsa, Okla. - The University of Tulsa softball team wanted to send its seniors out with a bang. Mission accomplished. TU posted three runs in the first inning, then six more in the final two stanzas for a much needed 9-5 Conference USA victory over Southern Miss. A crowd of 297 witnessed the final home game for four TU players at the Donna J. Hardesty Sports Complex on Sunday.
The Golden Hurricane opened the first inning with a leadoff walk from freshman Lauren Lindsay. Senior Kelli McGlasson reached on a fielding error to give TU a pair of baserunners. After two outs, senior Angela Osbon ripped her first pitch over the left field fence for a three run home run.
Yesterday's hero for USM, Lauren Castellvi led off the top of the second with a second two-strike home run to cut the Tulsa lead to 3-1. The score remained a two-run deficit until the top of the fifth, when the Golden Eagles scored on a two-out, two-strike single.
Tulsa broke the game open in the bottom of the fifth. Lindsay led off the stanza with a single up the middle, then beat the throw on a sacrifice attempt by McGlasson. After TU hit into a double-play, the Hurricane rallied with a walk from Vanessa Vice and a run scoring single from Osbon. Freshman Brooke Smart then hit her second home run of the season with a shot to left field for a 7-2 lead.
The Hurricane posted two more runs in the bottom of the sixth. Senior Lindsay Galloway led off the TU half with a single to leftfield, followed by two outs. A double by McGlasson to left center, scored Galloway from second who was aided by an obstruction call at home plate. McGlasson would later score on a single by junior Sara Dyer.
The win improves Tulsa to 28-25 on the season. It also puts the Hurricane into a second place tie with East Carolina and a 11-9 league mark and guarantees the Hurricane a spot in the C-USA Championship beginning May 11-13. Southern Miss falls to 18-34 overall and 8-11 in league play. TU will travel to UTEP next weekend to finish out the regular season.
