Mobile, Alabama - Tulsa's 15 senior football student-athletes went to the USA Childrens Hospital on Friday morning, following the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) breakfast, to spread some joy to the young children.
The Hurricane talked with the kids, signed autographs, posed for pictures and dispersed some TU gifts to the kids.
Here's some thoughts about today's Hospital visit:
Senior Walter Boyd: "These kids have no idea who we are when we walk into their rooms. Back in Tulsa they at least have some inclination. Here, we're just some guys they can look up to. We walked in here with our stature being taller -- 6-2, 6-3 -- they looked at us with eyes that they`ve seen something that brings them pure joy. I walked into a young boys room, Drake, and as soon as I walked into his room, his eyes lit up. We started talking and I gave him some gloves and told him `when you start playing football wear these, they'll be your first football gloves.' He said, `I'll be able to catch everything with these.' This brings a sense of joy to your heart. Every time I'm asked to go for this type of outreach, I'm always ready and willing because every day I wake up I know I'm blessed and fortunate to be a Division I student-athlete. That makes everything these kids are going through more special."
Coach Todd Graham: "It moves you to go in knowing how blessed you are and be able to reach out to people going through a tough time and just say, hey, we care. I think it really impacts our players. I can tell that there was a great spirit throughout the hospital. It leaves you with a god feeling. I heard our players on the way out thanking them for the opportunity. I think it means a lot to both the kids and our players. It's a very, very important thing to do."
Tulsa will go through a two hour workout in the afternoon before Friday night's Mayor's Banquet, where former NFL star quarterback Joe Theismann will be the special guest speaker.
