Tulsa Men's Tennis Overpowers Hawai`i 5-2

Tulsa, Okla. - The University of Tulsa's men's tennis team defeated the Hawai`i Rainbow Warriors, 5-2, in brisk conditions on Saturday afternoon at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center. The win moves Tulsa to 16-3 on the spring season.
The Golden Hurricane picked up a quick singles victory from junior Ross Cunningham, who smashed Spence Mendoza, 6-1, 6-2, at the No. 6 position. No. 18 Arnau Brugues scored his 13th victory of the season with a 6-2, 6-3, win over Dennis Lajola at the No. 1 position. Senior Will Gray clinched the match, defeating Craig Faulk, 6-2, 6-3, at the No. 4 position. Tulsa's fourth victory came from freshman Victor Kolik, who picked up his first victory over a ranked opponent, beating No. 113 Andreas Weber, 3-6, 6-0, 6-4, at the No. 2 position. The Rainbow Warriors got wins at the No. 3 and the No. 5 positions. Senior Ricardo Soriano fell to Sascha Heinemann, 7-6 (8-6), 7-5, 1-0 (11-9) in the last match to finish. While, fellow senior Alberto Sottocorno was beaten by Jeff Fitch, 6-4, 7-5.
Tulsa won the doubles point with victories at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions. TU's No. 3 pair of Kolik / Sottocorno smoked the team of Mendoza / Faulk, 8-2. The Golden Hurricane's top pair, No. 19 Andy Connelly / Cunningham defeated the duo of Heinemann / Weber in a tough match, 9-7. In only its third lost of the season, the No. 36 duo of Brugues / Soriano fell to Fitch / Lajola, 8-7 (7-5).
The Golden Hurricane will be on the road next week against No. 22 Rice and No. 5 Texas. TU will face its Conference USA rival No. 22 Rice on Wednesday and play the fifth-ranked Longhorns on Thursday. Tulsa will play its final home match of the season on Wednesday, April 9 against No. 23 Oklahoma State at 5 p.m.
