Tulsa, Okla. - Senior Arnau Brugues, the nation's top-ranked player, cruised to an easy win over Bryant Salcedo to tie Tulsa's all-time career singles wins record, as the 20th-ranked Tulsa men's tennis team defeated 34th-ranked Vanderbilt, 5-2, on Sunday afternoon at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center. Tulsa improves to 11-5 on the season and defeats its second consecutive nationally-ranked opponent.
Brugues beat 103rd-ranked Bryant Salcedo, 6-1, 6-1, in No. 1 singles to move into a tie for first place with Nenad Toroman (1996-2000) on the school's all-time career singles wins list with 100 career victories.
Tulsa grabbed the early 1-0 lead with a pair doubles wins, including Ross Cunningham and Philip Stephens upsetting 25th-ranked Adam Baker and Alex Zotov, 8-5, in the No. 1 position. Wojciech Starakiewicz and James Seagraves posted an 8-5 decision over James Moye and Vijay Paul in No. 3 doubles to give the Golden Hurricane the doubles point.
In singles, Brugues extended Tulsa's lead to 2-0 with his win in the No. 1 position. Freshman Ashley Watling pushed the lead to 3-0 with a 6-3, 6-0, win over Charlie Jones in the No. 5 slot, before Vanderbilt's Adam Baker cut the score to 3-1 with a 6-2, 6-3, win over senior Ross Cunningham.
Freshman Wojciech Starakiewicz clinched the Tulsa victory with a 6-3, 6-0, win over Alex DiValerio in No. 6 singles, extending TU's lead to 4-1. The win marked Starakiewicz's first collegiate singles victory, as the Wroclaw, Poland, native improves to 1-2 on the season.
Junior Philip Stephens picked up Tulsa's last singles win with a 6-1, 6-4, decision over Vijay Paul in the No. 3 position, snapping a five-match losing streak.
Tulsa returns to the court against 53rd-ranked San Diego at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 10, at the Case Tennis Center.
