Irving, Texas - The University of Tulsa's April Montgomery has been named one of 12 recipients of the Jim Castañeda Postgraduate Scholarship Awards today, it was announced by C-USA Commissioner Britton Banowsky.
Montgomery, from Broken Arrow, Okla. (Broken Arrow HS), ran track at Tulsa for the last four years after red-shirting in the 2004-05 season. A 12-time letterwinner, Montgomery has maintained a 3.96 grade point average in psychology and earned C-USA Academic Team accolades this past year.
As a senior, Montgomery qualified for the NCAA Championships in the 400-meter hurdles. She earned all-conference honors in outdoor track for the 400m hurdles and the 4x400-meter relay, while also earning indoor all-league merits for the 4x400m relay.
Montgomery's best mark in 2009 for the 400m hurdles was a time of 58.71 at the NCAA Regional.
Montgomery will continue her education at The University of Tulsa and work as a graduate assistant in the athletic department.
This is the first year the award has been named for Dr. Castañeda, who served Rice University for 46 years as an educator, coach and Faculty Athletics Representative before he passed away in November. The conference annually presents the $4,000 Postgraduate Scholarship awards to graduates (one from each C-USA institution) as selected by the C-USA Faculty Athletics Representatives and approved by the Board of Directors.
