TULSA, Okla. - A driving snow storm and freezing temperatures couldn't stop the Tulsa track and field teams from opening the outdoor season with its annual Tulsa Duels on Saturday at the Hurricane Soccer and Track Stadium.
Despite three inches of snow and a wind-chill of 18 degrees, the Hurricane posted nine first-place finishes at the condensed 10-event meet. Times suffered due to poor conditions, which also included wind gusts up to 30 miles per hour.
Ashley Wills won the 100m in 12.78, followed by teammate Lenora Guion-Firmin in second place with a time of 13.07. Brianna Steel captured gold in the 200m in 28.36, Racquell Powell won the 400m in 1:07.34 and Melanie Cleland won in the 800m in 2:52.02.
Lydia Chamberlin claimed victory in the shot put with a toss of 9.31m (30-06.5).
On the men's side, Julian Frazier won the 200m in 26.54, David Fitter claimed gold in the 400m in 54.59 and Justin Duncan won the 800m in 2:49.64. Kolton Taylor won the long jump with a leap of 5.72m (18-09.25).
Workers, student-athletes and coaches all chipped in to shovel mounds of snow off the track throughout the day, often to little success, as runners sloshed their way to the finish line.
The meet was scheduled to feature 8 field events and 12 running events, but was reduced to 5 field events and 5 running events due to severe winter weather.
Tulsa is back in action next Saturday, March 27th at the Razorback Spring Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark.
