Shavodrick Beaver

Leading up to the start of the 2010 football season, TulsaHurricane.com will run profiles on football student-athletes. Today's feature is on sophomore quarterback Shavodrick Beaver.

Shavodrick Beaver has a lot he wants to accomplish on the field at The University of Tulsa, but his biggest goal in life is what he does off of it.

"My main goal is to be a role model for my three sisters," Beaver said. "They look up to me because I am still in school and trying to do things the right way. I wouldn't say I'm trying to be a father figure but I want to be a person they can count on."

Shavodrick and his three younger sisters Kelsey, Kalaisha and Kiara didn't have much growing up, but they had each other and their mother, Jackie.

"My mom is my biggest inspiration because I've never really had that father figure in my life," Beaver said. "She has always been there for us and I can always count on her."

Jackie Beaver raised all four children by herself and endured rocky relationships that included being physically abused by the father of her youngest daughter.

Shavodrick witnessed that and understands the pain and sacrifices his mother made for all of them.

"I appreciate [all she's done] and that's why I go out here and do my best everyday so she doesn't have anything to stress about," Beaver said.

The quarterback from Wichita Falls, Texas, is entering his sophomore season with the Golden Hurricane and will be competing for more playing time behind returning starter G.J. Kinne.

But Beaver down plays any possible controversy over the job after the two battled for the starting position last summer.

"I'm looking forward to a really good season," Beaver said. "As far as the quarterback competition goes, G.J. is a good leader and I look up to him. He has a little bit more experience, but I'm going to go in there and give it my all and compete everyday. I'm starting to understand the offense more and more so I'm just going to go out there and compete."
