Leading up to the start of the 2010 football season, TulsaHurricane.com will run profiles on football student-athletes. Today's feature is junior cornerback Milton Howell.
Milton Howell is in his first year as a member of the University of Tulsa football team. The junior-college transfer played quarterback at every level of the game before coming to TU.
He was successful in high school and was part of a Navarro College team that went 21-2 during his two years with the program.
Despite having a storied background as a quarterback, Howell thought it would be in his best interest to switch to cornerback as a member of the Golden Hurricane. So now Howell is learning a new position on the defensive side of the ball in hopes of earning playing time at Tulsa.
"I felt it would be the best thing for me," Howell said. "I just started playing cornerback this summer, but I'm working hard and learning as much as I can. I think I'm doing a good job so far, and I just have to keep learning."
Howell said that being a former signal caller has helped in his transition because he can predict what the quarterback is going to do.
"Playing quarterback has definitely given me an advantage with my change," Howell said. "I know what (the quarterback) is looking at, so I can usually get a better break on the ball.
"I'm hopefully going to get some playing time this year and get the chance to make some plays. I just have to keep working hard every single day and show the coaches what I can do."
Tulsa opens the 2010 season at defending Conference USA Champion East Carolina on Sunday, September 5th on ESPN 2. Tulsa will open the home season against Bowling Green on Sept. 11th. Season tickets are available at www.TulsaHurricane.com or by calling 918.631.GoTU (4688).
