UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. - Instead of beginning their first day of classes at The University of Tulsa on Monday as college students, three Golden Hurricane incoming freshman will participate in the 2010 U.S. Amateur.
John Kim, Mark Hicks and Cody Kent tee off in the seven-day tournament, which begins Monday, August 24th at Chambers Bay in University Place, Wash.
In order to compete in the USGA event, golfers must have qualified at one of the 99 sectional tournaments held across the country. Kim and Hicks both finished as medalists in their respective qualifiers. Kim shot a two-round score of 140, finishing first in the qualifier at Big Canyon Country Club in Newport Beach, Calif. Hicks shot 143 to tie for first at Mission Viejo Country Club in Mission Viejo, Calif. Kent placed third with a score of 138 at the qualifier at Saddle Rock Golf Course in Aurora, Colo.
The U.S. Amateur will begin with two rounds of stroke play before the field of 312 is cut down to 64. The low 64 golfers will then compete in three rounds of match play, in which players compete head-to-head in order to win points on each hole. The golfer with the lowest score on a hole, receives the point. But if the players finish with the same score, then the hole is halved. The quarters, semis and final rounds will also be decided by match play, with golfers playing a total 36 holes in the final round.
