TULSA, Okla. - Tulsa held on for a 33-20 victory over Bowling Green while piling up 546 yards of total offense on Saturday night in front of 19,565 fans at H.A. Chapman Stadium.
Tulsa improved to 1-1 heading into next weeks game against Oklahoma State, while Bowling Green fell to 0-2.
After combining for 41 points in the first half, the two teams amounted for just 12 points in the second half, six for each team. Tulsa gained 360 yards in the first half as compared to 186 second-half yards, while Bowling Green had 11 yards more in the second half with 157 yards.
Tulsa's defense shut down Bowling Green's running game holding the falcons to 41 yards, while gaining 190 of their own on the ground. It was the Tulsa defense that was opportunistic with three takeaways and five quarterback sacks for -26 yards.
For the game, Tulsa's G.J. Kinne completed 27 passes for 356 yards and two touchdowns, while Alex Singleton rushed for 74 yards and one TD, including 63 yards on seven rushes on the last drive of the game to preserve the Tulsa victory.
Kinne connected with Damaris Johnson seven times for 84 yards and Trae Johnson six times for 80 yards.
"We definitely got better as a football team. You know, lots of young guys out there getting their first start. I'm really proud of the maturity that our senior leadership is showing," said Head Coach Todd Graham.
Tulsa put up the only points in the third quarter as Kevin Fitzpatrick connected on two field goals. Bowling Green scored the first touchdown of the second half at the 9:54 mark of the fourth quarter. The BGSU score came on a two-yard run by quarterback Matt Schilz.
It was the visitors from Ohio that got on the scoreboard first to begin the game. A Tulsa fumble on the fourth play of the first drive gave Bowling Green the ball at the Hurricane 44-yard line. The Falcons took 11 plays and 4:27 off the clock to score on a one-yard run by Schilz.
Tulsa took the next possession to the BGSU seven-yard line, but had to settle for a 23-yard field goal by Fitzpatrick.
On the subsequent play, Hurricane freshman Marco Nelson, making his first career start at safety, intercepted a Schilz pass at the Tulsa's 45-yard line. Tulsa took only 43 seconds to go 55 yards in two plays as junior G.J. Kinne threw 42 yards for the TD to put the Hurricane ahead 10-7 at the 4:39 mark of the first quarter.
A Hurricane drive stalled at the 10-yard line, but Fitzpatrick kicked his second field goal of the half, this time going for 27 yards, capping a 58-yard, 10-play drive.
Tulsa took possession after a Shawn Jackson interception gave the Hurricane the ball at the Tulsa 25-yard line, as Kinne led Tulsa 75 yards in 10 plays for a 20-7 lead. Alex Singleton ran the final five yards
After the Tulsa defense held Bowling Green to just five yards in the three plays, the BGSU defense took the ball back on the first play as a Kinne pass was picked off by Dwayne Woods, and one play later Willie Geter ran the one yard to make the score 20-14.
But the Hurricane took only 47 seconds to score on a Kinne to Trae Johnson 25-yard pass that capped a six-play, 74-yard drive with 0:32 left on the first half clock.
For the half, the Hurricane Tulsa outgained Bowling Green 360 to 146 as Kinne completed 17-of-28 passes for 255 yards. BGSU gained 96 yards passing and 50 yards rushing.
In the past four quarters dating back to last week's East Carolina game, Tulsa had scored 60 points.
