Stillwater, Okla. - G.J. Kinne passed for 219 yards and accounted for two touchdowns as Tulsa fell to Oklahoma State, 65-28 Saturday evening at Boone Pickens Stadium.
The Golden Hurricane (1-2) scored three of its touchdowns in the second half, highlighted by Marco Nelson's 81-yard interception return for a touchdown. Kinne threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Willie Carter, and Trey Watts scored his first career touchdown with a two-yard run.
Tulsa totaled 428 yards of offense, including 229 yards passing and 199 rushing. Shavodrick Beaver ran 11 times for 55 yards, Alex Singleton ran 11 times for 30 yards and Watts ran nine times for 29 yards.
Nelson led the Hurricane defensive effort with 12 tackles, including eight solo and four assists, and his big interception return. Curnelius Arnick tallied nine solo tackles.
Oklahoma State (3-0) totaled 722 yards of offense including 574 passing and 148 rushing. OSU quarterback Brandon Weeden threw for 409 yards and six touchdowns, Joseph Randle ran 12 times for 72 yards and Kendall Hunter ran 11 times for 59 yards.
Oklahoma State scored on each of their first 10 possessions, throwing eight touchdown passes and kicking three field goals. The eight touchdown passes is the most allowed by TU in school history.
With 3:55 remaining in the third quarter, the Golden Hurricane put its second touchdown on the board as Carter caught a 10-yard pass from Kinne to make the score, 58-14, OSU. The TU drive went nine plays for 80 yards in 3:25 for the score.
Tulsa got its first defensive stop with 3:55 left in the third quarter, forcing OSU to punt.
On its ensuing possession, Tulsa drove 76 yards in 15 plays for a touchdown capped by Watts' two-yard run. It was the redshirt freshman's first career touchdown.
The Golden Hurricane defense stopped an Oklahoma State drive again with less than nine minutes to play, when Nelson intercepted Clint Chelf's pass and returned it 81 yards for a touchdown. It was Nelson's second interception in as many games and his first career score.
The 81-yard interception return for a touchdown was the fourth longest in school history, and the longest since Jeff Jordan returned an interception 97 yards against Memphis in 1963.
The Cowboys put the final score on the board with 3:48 remaining in the game on a 27-yard pass from Chelf to Charlie Moore.
Oklahoma State took the opening kickoff from its own 20-yard line down the field and Dan Bailey kicked a 49-yard field goal to give the Cowboys a 3-0 lead.
After a three-and-out possession by Tulsa, OSU scored on a one-yard touchdown pass from Weeden to Michael Harrison, making the score 10-0.
Oklahoma State took an interception and turned it into a 34-yard field goal and following a TU punt, the Cowboys drove 75 yards capped by a 19-yard touchdown pass from Weeden to Hubert Anyiam. After the first quarter OSU led Tulsa, 20-0.
The Golden Hurricane's ensuing possession flowed into the second quarter, as TU drove 80 yards on 17 plays in 6:22. Kinne scored on a one-yard run to give the Hurricane its first points of the contest.
Oklahoma State took the ensuing kickoff 81 yards in seven plays, scoring on an 8-yard pass from Weeden to Justin Blackmon to make the score, 27-7.
Tulsa drove down the field on its following possession, picking up long plays of 28 and 27 yards on Kinne passes to Ricky Johnson and Jameel Owens, respectively. However, OSU picked off a fade pass in the end zone and returned it 79 yards to the TU 21. On the first play of the drive, Weeden hit Blackmon for a 19-yard touchdown pass. The Cowboys led, 34-7.
Oklahoma State scored with 14 seconds remaining in the first half on a 19-yard pass from Weeden to Josh Cooper.
Going into the locker room at the half TU had 247 yard of total offense - 154 passing and 12 rushing, and OSU had 417 total yards - 328 passing and 89 rushing.
