GREENVILLE, N.C. - East Carolina quarterback Dominique Davis threw up for grabs a 33-yard pass into the end zone that 6'8" receiver Justin Jones came down with to give The Pirates a 51-49 victory over Tulsa in front of 50,010 fans at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
With 1:22 on the game clock Tulsa took the lead 49-45 on a three-yard pass from G.J. Kinne to Charles Clay. But, East Carolina went 66 yards in nine plays with the TD pass coming on a fourth down and 10 with 0:05 left on the game clock to take the victory away from the Hurricane.
It was a scoring frenzy in the second half as the two teams combined for 67 points. After the two teams failed to amount much of a drive on their first second half possessions, both teams followed that with touchdowns on the next 10 possessions.
For the game, Tulsa out-gained East Carolina 579 to 538 yards, with 399 coming through the air and 180 yards on the ground. Tulsa's G.J. Kinne completed 28-of-43 passes for career-bests of 399 yards and five touchdowns. ECU's Dominique Davis, making his first start, completed 27-of-6 passes for 383 yards and five TDs.
The second-half scoring barrage began when Tulsa scored on its second possession in the third quarter going 34 yards in five plays to take a 23-17 lead, as Clay Sears caught his first career touchdown a 12-yarder from Kinne. Tulsa's lead was short-lived as Dominique Davis threw 43 yards to Lance Lewis to re-take the lead 24-23, capping a 56-yard drive.
The Hurricane followed that ECU scoring drive with a 68-yard, eight-play scoring drive of their own that gave the Hurricane a 29-24 lead, as the Kinne's PAT pass attempt failed.
ECU responded with an 80-yard, 14-play drive that saw Davis run the final two yards for the score to jump back on top by two points, 31-29.
However, it took Tulsa only 1:33 to score its' fourth TD of the second half, as an 11-yard pass from Kinne to Thomas Roberson was tipped in the air and eventually grabbed by Trae Johnson in the end zone for the touchdown.
ECU then took just 2:10 off the clock as Davis threw 34 yards to Dwayne Harris for the TD and a 45-42 lead with 6:05 remaining in the game.
Tulsa wasted little time in equaling the score as Kinne threw 25 yards to Willie Carter, then Carter did the rest going another 50 yards for a 75-yard touchdown reception on third-and-10. However, Tulsa's pass attempt on the PAT failed for the third time on the day, as Tulsa took just a four-point lead at 35-31 with 12:54 remaining in the game.
The Pirates took only 3:06 off the clock to score for the third straight time and re-take the lead, 38-35, as Davis threw his third TD pass of the game to cap an eight-play, 67-yard drive.
To open the game, Tulsa's defense held the Pirates at the Hurricane 41-yard line, forcing a punt on the opening possession of the game, but on Tulsa's first possession, a fumble on the second play gave the Pirates the ball with only 27 yards shy of the goal line.
After a 10-yard holding penalty on the first play, Jonathan Williams broke a tackle at the line of scrimmage and proceeded to go 37 yards for a touchdown on the second play of the drive.
The Hurricane amassed just 10 yards on five plays on its first two possessions, but went 51 yards on seven plays on its' next possession.
Tulsa took that third possession in for a touchdown as Alex Singleton ran in from one-yard out for the score at the 5:35 mark of the first quarter. Tulsa's Damaris Johnson took a pitch on an end around 21 yards to the ECU one-yard line to set up the score.
ECU took a 10-7 lead on a Michael Barbour 38-yard field goal at the 3:01 mark of the first period.
Tulsa took its first lead of the game, 13-10, with a 31-yard run by Damaris Johnson down the right sideline at the 7:15 mark of the second quarter, but failed on the two-point conversion attempt.
Less than three minutes later, the Pirates took the lead again, 17-13, on a 30-yard pass from Dominique Davis to Lance Lewis at the 4:30 mark as the TD capped a 64-yard, nine-play drive. Tulsa marched down the field, going 68 yards in 11 plays, but had to settle for a 22-yard Kevin Fitzpatrick field goal.
At the intermission, Tulsa held a 262 to 233-yard edge in total offense, despite trailing on the scoreboard by one point, 17-16.
