Bench Leads Tulsa to, 74-66, Win at SMU

DALLAS - Jordan Clarkson scored 17 points as the Tulsa bench totaled 38 points on the way to a, 74-66, win at Conference USA rival SMU Saturday afternoon at Moody Coliseum.
With the important road win, the Golden Hurricane improves to 15-11 overall and 8-4 in C-USA play. SMU, meanwhile, falls to 16-10 overall and 7-5 in league play. TU will stay within one game of first place in the league standings.
Kodi Maduka, back home in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, scored 12 points on 4-of-5 shooting from the floor, with 4-of-5 free throws. He also added a pair of blocks. Justin Hurtt tallied 14 points and Bryson Pope added 11 points. D.J. Magley made all four shots from the floor, totaling nine points.
The Hurricane made 50 percent of its field goals and outscored the Mustangs in the paint, 36-22, and in second-chance points, 15-5. TU also out-rebounded SMU, 34-25, including 16-9 on the offensive boards.
Tulsa led at halftime, 34-29, but SMU's Robert Nyakundi, who finished with 22 points, quickly hit two three-pointers to give SMU a, 35-34, lead.
Steven Idlet made a pair of free throws with 17:46 on the clock to give the Hurricane the lead, 36-35, an advantage it would not lose for the rest of the game.
Hurtt hit a three and Clarkson made a jumper and a layup, moving TU ahead, 43-35, with 14:29 left in the game.
TU expanded its lead to 12 points with 11:51 remaining when Magley hit a turnaround hook shot that made the score, 51-39. The basket capped a, 17-4, run.
SMU could not get any closer until Papa Dia, who scored 18 points, made a layup with 3:03 remaining to make the score, 64-61, TU.
The Golden Hurricane used a, 10-4, run to pull away to a nine-point, 74-65, lead with 22 seconds left. Dia made one of two free throws with 15 seconds left to reach the final, 74-66 margin.
Clarkson made the first two baskets of the game with a pair of layups that gave Tulsa a, 4-0, lead. The first layup came with 16:53 left on the clock, as neither team scored for the first three minutes. SMU got its first points on a pair of free throws by Nyakundi, and its first field goal on a tip-in by Collin Mangrum with 14:36 left in the half.
The Hurricane took its largest lead of the first half at, 17-10, when Hurtt made a layup and a free throw with 10:45 remaining in the half.
The Mustangs took a one-point lead with 5:19 left when Mike Walker made one of two free throws to bring the score to, 24-23, SMU.
Tulsa re-took the advantage on a jumper by Clarkson, and extended the lead to six points at, 30-24, on a layup by Magley and a three-pointer by Hurtt.
TU led at the half, 34-29.
The Golden Hurricane travels to Marshall Wednesday for a 6 p.m. CT game to be televised by CBS College Sports.
