Drake Relays Await Golden Hurricane

TULSA, Okla. - The University of Tulsa track and field teams will head to Des Moines, Iowa, the site of this year's NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, for the 2011 Drake Relays April 28-30. Tulsa has had a successful outdoor campaign at the midway point of the campaign, as four school records have fallen and 26 top-five performances have occurred so far this year.
TULSA CLAIMS FIVE EVENTS AT JOHN McDONNELL INVITATIONAL, 2 SCHOOL RECORDS FALL
The Golden Hurricane won five event titles and two school records fell at the John McDonnell Invitational. Sophomore Chris O'Hare broke the school record in the 1,500 meters when he posted a time of 3:42.54. His mark was the 15th-fastest in the nation at that point. Senior Justin Duncan placed fourth in the same event with a time of 3:42.80. His mark was second in school history and was also the 19th-fastest time posted in the NCAA this season. Senior Brianna Steel won the Heptathlon with a school-record 5,158 points, and her total was good for 26th in the nation. Sophomore Carolin Imhof placed third in the event with 4,807 points, which was third in school history. Senior Kelsey Klein finished second in both the Hammer and Discus. Her toss of 46.93m in the Discus was second in school history, and she posted a Hammer mark of 49.17m. Senior Jennifer Mace won the 400m dash with a mark of 54.98, and freshman Katherine Camp captured the 400m Hurdle event with a time of 1:05.15. Mace was the anchor of the 1,600m Relay champions. The other members of the relay team were sophomore Caroline Schuster, junior Racquell Powell and sophomore Lenora Guion-Firmin. Over on the men's side, the 1,600m Relay team won the title with a mark of 3:25.98. The team consisted of juniors David Fitter and Justin Smith, sophomore Alex Sementelli and freshman Brian Tabb.
STEEL, O'HARE SWEEP CONFERENCE USA ATHLETE OF THE WEEK HONORS
Senior Brianna Steel and sophomore Chris O'Hare were named the C-USA Women's and Men's Outdoor Track & Field Athletes of the Week for the first time in their respective careers, the league announced April 26. O'Hare clocked a school-record time of 3:42.54 in the 1,500 meters at the John McDonnell Invitational. His performance ranked 15th best in the Track & Field Results Reporting System used by the NCAA. Steel recorded a school-record 5,158 points in the heptathlon, also at the John McDonnell Invitational. The point total won the event and ranked her 29th in the nation. Steel placed among the top four in all six categories, winning the 800m (2:16.61) and high jump (1.66m). She also finished second in the shot put (11.79m) and long jump (5.52m).
STONES EARNS FIRST-CAREER C-USA WEEKLY HONOR
Carl Stones was named the C-USA Men's Outdoor Track & Field of the Week for the first time in his career April 19. The junior member of The University of Tulsa men's track and field team placed fourth in the 3,000-meter Steeplechase with a time of 8:50.12 in the Olympic heat of the Mt. SAC Relays April 14 in Walnut, Calif. His time ranked as the seventh-fastest in the most recent Track & Field Results Reporting System used by the NCAA. He also broke the school record with his time.
SCHOOLS RECORDS AND EVENT TITLES GO TO TULSA AT MT. SAC RELAYS AND JOHN JACOBS INVITE
Senior Paula Whiting and junior Carl Stones both broke school records at the Mt. SAC Relays. Whiting ran a 5,000 meters of 15:46.91, which was the third-fastest in the NCAA at the time. She finished 14th in the Elite heat that featured world class runners and Olympians. Stones set the school record in the 3,000-meter Steeplechase finishing fourth in the Olympic heat with a mark of 8:50.12. Senior Lewis Timmins finished 13th in the Elite section of the 10,000 meters with a time of 29:26.64. His mark was the second fastest in school history. Junior Sam Masters highlighted the John Jacobs Invite when he won the 3,000 meters with a mark of 8:20.71. His time was the second-fastest in school history.
