HOUSTON - Sophomore Alex Sementelli finished third in the decathlon and senior Brianna Steel placed fourth in the heptathlon at the 2011 Conference USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships Friday at the Rice Soccer/Track Stadium.

The Tulsa men sit in second place after two days of competition with 30 points, just two behind UTEP. Rice (27), East Carolina (14) and Southern Miss (8) round out the top five.

The Tulsa women are in fourth place overall with 16 points. UTEP (28), ECU (22) and UAB (17) lead the way, while SMU (14) rounds out the top five after two days.

Sementelli broke his own school record with 6,686 points in the decathlon, winning the bronze medal for the second-straight year.

His best performance of the day came in the 1,500 meter run, when he finished second with a season-best time of 4:46.13. He also finished third in the Pole Vault by tying his personal best with a mark of 3.80m.

Sementelli finished fourth in the Discus with a toss of 35.19m, which was the fifth-best throw in school history. He also finished in fourth in the 110m Hurdles (15.56) and fifth in the Javelin (46.07m)

Fellow sophomore Kolton Taylor earned four points for Tulsa with his fifth-place finish in the decathlon. His 6,050 points was good for third-most in school history.

The highlight of Taylor's day came when he finished second in the 110m Hurdles with a mark of 15.03. The time was the fifth-fastest in school history. He also finished sixth in the 1,500m run (season-best 5:08.78), seventh in both the Javelin (40.10m) and Pole Vault (2.90m), and 10th in the Discus (29.46m).

TU picked up 20 points in the 10,000 meter run as four of the top eight positions went in favor of the Golden Hurricane.

Junior Paulo Pinheiro and sophomore Geraint Davies finished second and third, respectively. Pinheiro clocked a time of 30:53.61, while Davies ran a 31:04.05.

Junior Mitch Johnson finished fifth (31:11.53), and junior Daniel LePage was seventh (31:35.02).

On the women's side, Steel placed fourth in the heptathlon, and sophomore Carolin Imhof wrapped up competition in seventh. Both marks were improvements from last season.

Steel won the 800 meters in 2:20.78 and finished third in the Javelin with a mark of 35:48m. Her throw was the fourth-best in school history.

She also set a season-best in the Long Jump with a sixth-place finish after leaping 5.55m.

Imhof placed second in the Javelin (37.15m), and she also had the fifth-best Long Jump in school history as she finished third in 5.74m.

Imhof placed eighth in the 800 meters with a season-best time of 2:32.24.

Sophomore Jaclyn Rollins placed fourth in the 10,000 meters with a time of 37:16.32, and senior Kelsey Klein was fifth in the Hammer Throw with a toss of 53.73m. Her mark improved the school record that she already owns.

Tulsa will be in action in the third day of competition May 14 in Houston.
