NEW ORLEANS - The University of Tulsa track and field teams had 12 members qualify for the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field West Preliminaries, which will take place May 26-28 in Eugene, Ore.
Headlining the selections are senior Paula Whiting and sophomore Chris O'Hare. Whiting qualified with the second-fastest time in the 5,000 at 15:46.91. She will be making her second-straight appearance in the West Preliminaries, and she also reached the NCAA Championships a year ago.
Sophomore Ashley Scott also qualified in the 5,000, posting the 41st-best time at 16:40.52. She will be making her first trip to the West Preliminaries.
O'Hare qualified with the third-fastest time in the 1,500 at 3:41.08, and he has reached this stage both years of his career. Senior Justin Duncan (12th, 3:42.80) and junior Tom Marshall (28th, 3:45.53) also qualified in the 1,500. Marshall is making his first appearance and Duncan will be going for the third-straight year.
Junior Carl Stones will be making his second appearance in the 3,000m Steeplechase, as he qualified 11th with a mark of 8:50.12.
Senior Jennifer Mace will be returning to the West Preliminaries for the fourth time in her illustrious career, as she qualified 32nd in the 400m dash (54.08).
The women's 4x400m Relay team qualified 18th out of 24 teams with a mark of 3:39.33. The team consists of Mace, junior Racquell Powell and sophomore Lenora Guion-Firmin and Caroline Schuster. Powell is the only member of the team who didn't compete in last year's event.
Sophomore Geraint Davies (43rd in the 5,000, 14:07.90) and junior Mitch Johnson (45th in the 10,000, 29:56.68) also qualified in the top 48.
