Tulsa Golfers Move Up in NCAA-San Diego Regional

San Diego, Calif. - Saturday's final round of the NCAA Division I Men's Golf San Diego Regional is set up to be an exciting one as seven teams are within four strokes of fifth place. The Tulsa golfers moved up to eighth place after second round competition on Friday with a two-under par score of 286 at the par-72 Farms Golf Club.
The final 18 holes will be played Saturday. The top five teams following the Saturday's final round will advance to the NCAA Championship, May 31-June 5, at Karsten Creek in Stillwater, Okla.
The nation's 15th-ranked Southern Cal Trojans continue to lead the field with a 36-hole total of 568. USC sits four strokes ahead of No. 2-ranked UCLA and 11 strokes in front of Ohio State, which carded the best round of the day with a nine-under par score of 279. SMU (583), San Diego and Texas (584) round out the top five places.
With a 36-hole total of 586, the Hurricane is just two strokes behind that all-important top five position.
Tulsa freshman John Young Kim scored the best round of the day for the Hurricane with a five-under par 67 and has a one-under par total score of 143 for 12th place. The Tulsa golfers began their day on hole 10, and Kim ended up with a four-under par scorer after the first nine holes with birdies on holes13, 15, 16 and 18. He then birdied the par-3 second hole and took a five-under par total into his 16th hole.
Kim double-bogeyed the par-4 seventh hole, but got one stroke back with a birdie on the next hole.
Junior Stephen Carney finished the day with a one-under par 71 and has a 148 total. After a bogey on his first hole, Carney closed out his first nine holes with an eagle putt on hole 18. He also knocked in birdie putts on holes 1, 3 and 9.
Carney and sophomore Chris Worrell are tied for 38th place with totals of 148. Worrell finished the day with an even-par score of 72.
Tulsa's other golfer counting a score today was the 76 turned in by freshman Johannes Veerman, while junior Arie Fauzi shot a round of 79. Fauzi is in 50th place with a score of 150, while Veerman's 155 total puts him in 60th place.
