EUGENE, Ore. - Senior Justin Duncan and sophomore Chris O'Hare both advanced to the quarterfinal round of the 1,500-meter run at the 2011 NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field West Preliminary Thursday at Historic Hayward Field.

Duncan finished second out of 48 competitors with a time of 3:45.01. Patrick Casey of Montana State was the only runner in the field to best Duncan's time. O'Hare won his heat and qualified seventh overall with a mark of 3:46.33.

The top five from each of the four heats plus the next four fastest times (24 runners) all advanced to the National Quarterfinal, which will take place in Eugene at 3:45 p.m. (CST) May 28.

There will be two heats with 12 runners each, and the top five from each heat plus the next two fastest times will qualify for the 2011 NCAA Championship in Des Moines, Iowa June 8-11.

Junior Tom Marshall failed to reach the next round as he finished 46th in the 1,500 with a mark of 3:55.42.

Senior Jennifer Mace and junior Mitch Johnson also competed at the NCAA West Preliminary Round, but neither qualified for the next stage.

Mace was making her fourth-career appearance in the 400, and she placed 37th with a time of 55.93. She is also the anchor of the 4x400m relay team that will compete at 6:25 p.m. (CST) May 28. The other three members of the relay team are junior Racquell Powell and sophomores Caroline Schuster and Lenora Guion-Firmin.

Johnson placed 39th in the 10,000 with a mark of 30:43:79. He improved six spots from his original qualifying position of 45th out of the 48 competitors.

The only member of the Golden Hurricane track and field squad in action May 27 will be junior Carl Stones. He enters the 3,000m Steeplechase with the 11th-fastest time in the West Region this year (8:50.12), and the top 12 in tomorrow's race will qualify for the NCAA Championship. Stones will run at 9:20 p.m. (CST).
