Norman, Oklahoma - No. 1-ranked Oklahoma was in top form Saturday night as the Sooners captured a season-opening 47-14 victory over the Golden Hurricane in front of a sellout crowd of 85,260 fans at Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium.
The Sooners scored 30 first-half points and added 17 in the final two quarters, while Tulsa's only points came in the second and fourth quarters. Tulsa missed scoring opportunities when the Hurricane suffered an interception at the OU 20-yard line and a fumble recovered by OU at the Sooners' one-yard line.
For the game, OU's Landry Jones completed 35-of-47 passes for 375 yards and one TD, while Tulsa's G.J. Kinne threw for 271 yards and two touchdowns on 18-of-33 passes. Tulsa's Willie Carter caught five passes for 135 yards, while Oklahoma's Ryan Broyles had 14 receptions for 158 yards. OU's Dominique Whaley had a game-high 131 rushing yards and four touchdowns.
Oklahoma added to its' 30-7 halftime lead on their first second-half possession when the Sooners marched 62 yards in eight plays to take a 30-point lead at the 10:23 mark of the third quarter. On the subsequent possession, a 69-yard Kinne to Carter pass completion put the Hurricane on the Sooners' nine-yard line. However, on the next play the Sooners recovered a Tulsa fumble at the OU two-yard line ending any chance of a Hurricane score.
The Tulsa turnover was the third of the game for the Hurricane, and the second inside the Sooners 25-yard line.
OU's Whaley scored his fourth touchdown on a 39-yard carry to put the Sooners ahead 44-7 with 2:52 remaining in the third quarter. The Sooners added a 27-yard field goal after going 88 yards in eight plays.
Tulsa scored its second touchdown of the game at the 10:29 mark of the fourth quarter on a 24-yard pass from Kinne to Trey Watts, capping a five-play, 70-yard drive.
After the Tulsa defense held Oklahoma to 20 yards on five plays on the game's opening drive, the Hurricane defense held the Sooners to just a field goal on OU's second possession of the game.
OU's Jimmy Stevens kicked through the 28-yard field goal for a 3-0 lead at the 7:53 mark of the first quarter.
The Sooners took its' next possession 73 yards in 12 plays for a 10-0 lead as Whaley ran in from two yards out for the score. Oklahoma scored on their third straight possession as the Sooners went 71 yards in eight plays at the 13:49 mark of the second quarter.
On the subsequent possession, Tulsa marched to the Oklahoma 30-yard line, but a Kinne pass bounced off the hands of Freeman Kelley and went high in the air before Frank Alexander intercepted the ball. The Hurricane defense forced the Sooners to punt on that possession.
Oklahoma went ahead 23-0 at the 6:56 mark of the second period following an eight-play, 47-yard drive, as Whaley scored the Sooners first three TDs. After a Tulsa fumble, the Sooners took over at the Hurricane 27-yard line and scored in six plays to take a 30-0 lead with 4:23 left in the first half.
Tulsa responded with its first score of the game at the 2:54 mark of the first half when Kinne threw a 56-yard strike to Bryan Burnham, capping a 74-yard, four-play drive. The score was Kinne's 54th career touchdown pass and Burnham's first career TD reception.
At the intermission, Oklahoma had a 30-7 lead while holding an advantage in total offensive yardage, 361 to 167.
