Student-Athlete of the Week
Week of April 15-21
Senior Erin Huddleston (Women’s Track and Field) has a 3.876 GPA while majoring in exercise and sports science. Huddleston, a native of Point Lookout, Mo., broke the school record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase this past weekend at the Mt. Sac Relays in Walnut, Calif. Huddleston ran a time of 10:40.92 in the Olympic Development race to break Ashlea Filfillan’s mark of 10:45.92 set in 2007.

ROWING
Competed At Lake Natoma Invitational (The Tulsa rowers earned a top finish in the Varisty 8+ and a second-place mark in the Varisty 4+ in the final day of the Lake Natoma Invitaitonal in Gold River, Calif. TU's Varsity 8+ raced a time of 6:52.6 to finish seven seconds ahead of Sacramento State (6:59.8), while in the Varsity 4+ it was Kansas that crossed the finish line first in a time of 7:42.6, but Tulsa was four seconds behind with a time of 7:46.5.)
No. 22 SOFTBALL (33-13-1, 13-5 C-USA)
Lost to Houston 4-3 (Tulsa took a 3-1 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning, but Houston scored three runs to pick up the 4-3 win. Aimee Creger struck out 11 batters and allowed four earned runs on six hits with six walks. Jill Barrett collected three hits, while Samantha Cobb and Haley Henshaw each smashed home runs to lead TU.)
Fell to Houston, 3-2 (Down 2-0 in the sixth inning, Tulsa scored twice in the top of the inning to tie the game, 2-2, but Houston’s Haley Outon led off the seventh with a home run for a 3-2 Cougars win over the Hurricane. Samantha Cobb had two of TU’s six hits, while Haley Henshaw and Catherine Horner each knocked in a run to pace the TU offense.)
Defeated Houston, 2-0 (Jill Barrett scored twice and Aimee Creger struck out eight in a complete-game performance as Tulsa defeated Houston, 2-0, in the Conference USA series finale Sunday afternoon at Cougar Softball Field. Julie Kernen and Haley Henshaw provided the RBI for the Golden Hurricane, while Creger (18-5) scattered five hits and two walks in her fourth shutout of the season.)
No. 23 MEN’S TENNIS (15-7)
Defeated East Carolina, 4-1 (Tulsa dispatched East Carolina, 4-1, Friday, in the quarterfinals of the Conference USA Men’s Tennis Championship. After dropping the doubles point, TU rallied in singles play as Alejandro Espejo, Grant Ive, Japie De Klerk and Carlos Bautista earned wins for the Hurricane.)
Defeated No. 72 SMU, 4-2 (TU defeated SMU, 4-2, in the semifinals of the C-USA Men’s Tennis Championship. The Hurricane claimed the doubles point, and had a 2-0 lead after No. 48-ranked Clifford Marsland earned a 6-4, 6-3 win on Court 2. After SMU made it a 3-2 contest, freshman Carlos Bautista clinched the match with a 6-1, 6-7, 6-3 win on Court 5.)
Fell to No. 35 Memphis, 4-2 (The Hurricane lost to No. 35-ranked Memphis, 4-2, in the finals of the C-USA Men’s Tennis Championship. Picking up points for the Hurricane were junior Clifford Marsland, who earned his 10th-straight singles win, and freshman Carlos Bautista, who earned his 11th-straight triumph. )
No. 24 WOMEN’S TENNIS (19-6)
Defeated Marshall 4-0 (TU earned a 4-0 victory over Marshall during the quarterfinals of the Conference USA Women’s Tennis Championship. TU clinched the doubles point, and Renata Kuricova, Samantha Vickers and Maria Sant’Anna all picked up wins in singles competition.)
Defeated No. 35 Memphis 4-3 (Tulsa rallied from a 3-2 deficit to take down Memphis, 4-3, in the semifinals of the C-USA Women’s Tennis Championship. Samantha Vickers extended her winning streak to 17 matches with a 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 win over Courtney Collins. Clinching the match for TU was Renata Kuricova, who defeated Stefanie Mikesz 6-1, 6-7 (6-8), 7-6 (7-5).)
Lost to No. 20 Rice, 4-1 (The Golden Hurricane lost to the No. 20-ranked Rice Owls, 4-1, on Sunday in the finals of the Conference USA Women’s Tennis Championship. Picking up the lone point for the Golden Hurricane was Michelle Farley, who defeated Liat Zimmermann, 7-5, 6-2 at No. 3 singles.)
TRACK
Competed At Mt. Sac Relays (Erin Huddleston set a TU school record of 10:40:92 in the Olympic Development race of 3,000-meter steeplechase at the Mt. Sac Relays. In the men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase “A” race, junior Emmett Cookson recorded a time of 9:35.76 to earn an 18th-place showing. The TU trio of sophomore Tim Rackers, freshman Marc Scott and sophomore Brandi Krieg all attained personal bests in the 5,000-meters.)
