BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The 16th-ranked Tulsa softball team split its doubleheader at UAB Saturday, winning Game 1, 2-1, and falling in Game 2, 4-2, at UAB Softball Field.
Senior Aimee Creger (16-1) struck out 11 batters and allowed one unearned run on three hits in the Game 1 win for the Golden Hurricane (35-4, 10-1 C-USA). Senior shortstop Jill Barrett and freshman first baseman Jill Roye each homered for TU in the victory. Leigh Streetman (14-9) took the loss for UAB.
Barrett scored both Hurricane runs in Game 2, crossing the plate on a wild pitch and on an RBI single by junior left fielder Erica Sampson. The Blazers (23-16, 9-5 C-USA) hit a pair of two-run home runs in Game 2, while Lannah Campbell (9-6) struck out seven and allowed seven hits to earn the win. Bailey Erwin (10-1) took the loss in relief. With the Game 2 loss, TU saw its 17-game win streak end.
The teams will play the series rubber match at 1 p.m. Sunday.
UAB scored first in Game 1 when left fielder Amy Dennis singled, scoring pinch runner Hayley Davis in the second inning. Designated player Mary Warren led off the inning with a walk, was bunted to second, and moved to third on a passed ball.
Tulsa responded in the top of the third when Barrett hit a two-out line drive home run to right field. Roye gave the Hurricane the 2-1 lead in the fourth inning with a solo home run over the scoreboard in right.
After the UAB run scored, Creger retired seven straight batters before the next Blazer hit. UAB put runners on second and third in the fifth inning, and on first and second with one out in the seventh inning, but TU held them off the scoreboard. In the seventh, Creger got a strikeout and induced a groundout to third to end the game.
Game 2: UAB 4, Tulsa 2
UAB got two-run home runs from Megan McGrath and Mary Warren, while Tulsa's Jill Barrett scored twice in the Blazers' 4-2 Game 2 win.
The Golden Hurricane took a 2-0 lead after three innings. Barrett led off the game with a single to shortstop and moved around to score on a wild pitch. Barrett scored again in the top of the third on Erica Sampson's base hit down the left field line.
TU starter Caitlin Sill went 3.2 innings, struck out two, and allowed two runs on four hits. Bailey Erwin entered in relief with the bases loaded in the fourth inning following McGrath's home run, and struck out her first batter to end the frame.
Warren homered in the fifth inning to put UAB ahead, 4-2. Tulsa got its first two runners on base in the seventh when junior first baseman Julie Kernen doubled to left center and Cierra Hughes walked. Two groundouts and a strikeout, however, ended the comeback bid.
