The Tulsa football team returned to the practice field Monday morning with one week left of preseason camp before classes begin a week from today. The Hurricane had its second two-a-day practice of camp today, going on Harwell Field in the morning and finishing with an afternoon special teams practice on the turf of H.A. Chapman Stadium.
The temperature, that has stayed under 90-degrees for the previous six practice days, skyrocketed to a heat index of 105-degrees at the close of the morning workout.
Montgomery talked about returning to the practice field following Saturday's scrimmage and working on correcting what they saw on film.
"There was probably more positive things than what I thought coming out of the scrimmage on Saturday," said Montgomery. "Obviously, there are a lot of things we need to correct. We did some really good things at times. It's cleaning up little things and making sure we're on top of those – whether that's running a route at a certain depth, or knowing the down and distance from a defensive standpoint, running our blitz right and being gap sound – it's little things that can be fixed and that's what we were working on today."
"We were a little longer in our film session, and not as long on the field today. We had good energy. Anytime you have a little layoff, basically a day-and-a half to try to get back, we were a little sluggish coming out, but I thought we really picked up the intensity as the practice went on," Montgomery added.
With one week of practice remaining before school is in session, Montgomery's focus is getting improvement from the Hurricane each day.
"We're just trying to get as many things done as we can get done before school starts. We have a lot of good time right now and we're using it. It will be nice, honestly, when school starts back to get our guys on a routine and get them used to that before we get into game week," said Montgomery. "We'll really focus on us right now, and then we'll start breaking up and getting ready for game one."
Tulsa opens the 2015 season against the FAU Owls on Saturday, September 5, at H.A. Chapman Stadium with game time set for 2:30 p.m. The season opener has been billed as a White-Out Game, where all fans are encouraged to wear white to the game. Cost for the T-shirt is $5.00. In addition, the first 5,000 fans will receive a Hurricane Flag to help support Tulsa's 'Wave the Flag' Tradition that began a year ago.
