Montgomery Again Pleased With Energy of the Golden Hurricane

After two practices on Monday, the Tulsa Golden Hurricane football team returned to the practice field for a morning workout as temperatures were back to under 90-degrees Tuesday morning.

Montgomery was again pleased with the energy of the Hurricane team. "Today was a real spirited workout. I think the weather helped us. Anytime you get a little rain and cool weather the linemen's spirit lifts up and it was a little chirpy early on both sides. I think that fueled the rest of the practice," said Montgomery. "I thought we had great energy and thought we executed well on both sides. I liked the way the guys came out and got after it."

It was obvious that big plays helped shift momentum to each side of the ball during an 11-on-11 scrimmage situation late in practice.

"It's good to see the excitement from both sides of the ball. We try to treat everything as much as we can as game-like situation. Anytime the other side of the ball makes a big play, you have to do something to grab the momentum back. It was good to see the offense respond, and the defense responds back," added Montgomery. "That's what is making our practices so competitive. Guys are out here working against each other, trying to get better, working on their own craft and improving every day."

Montgomery was asked about his special teams following the two-hour workout.

"When you talk about the special teams units, they're kind of the forgotten ones. Special teams can change the landscape of a game. It can factor in more than anything. It can flip the field for you and provide so many different advantages. We're going to spend time on it, work on it and our guys going to take pride on being on those teams."

"Things are going well on special teams. It was good to get Redford (Jones) back today. Dalton (Parks) is getting more consistent. That's what we're wanting out of him in our punt game. More than anything just the guys on the team, it's a pride factor for them. You have a chance to get in and help our football team and play a significant role in what's going on," said Montgomery.

As for the return specialists, Montgomery see's more than a couple players being involved in the return game as the season progresses. "We're rotating a few guys in there as return guys. On punt returns, Connor and Bishop are both taking reps, and from a kickoff return standpoint you have both those guys, and we'll look at some different guys depending upon the week and probably throughout the course of the year," said Montgomery.
