The Tulsa football team was back in shoulder pads and helmets Sunday morning at Harwell Field. It was Tulsa's fourth practice and second in pads as the Golden Hurricane practiced again for nearly 160 minutes..

Tulsa Head Coach Philip Montgomery didn't get the fast start to practice he wanted, but was pleased with how the Hurricane ended.

"I didn't think we started as fast as I wanted us to, but I thought we ended practice well. That's just part of fall camp, and a part that you love to see them go to work and get better each and every day," said Montgomery.

The Hurricane began fall camp with a number of players battling, not only for starting spots, but those working to get into the rotation. The competition it has created in practice has been noticeable to the coaches.

"The competition is what we want. Those guys understand that each play matters, and when each play matters you can't take a play off. The competition is good. Those guys are feeling it. They're all pulling for each other, but they also know that I want to be the starter," said Montgomery. "There's not enough film to really go off of yet, but I like the battles and how they're going. Guys are having good plays and bad plays, and at the end of the day you'll add them up and see who's ahead."

Four days into practice, Montgomery likes the progress and wants to see his team correct its' mistakes and eventually eliminate those miscues on the field.

"I want to see us keep progressing. I want to see that we're correcting mistakes from the day before," said Montgomery. " I don't want to see us still making those same mistakes, the things we talked about in film. I want to see us fixing those and moving on. I think we've seen that as coaches. These guys are continuing to get better. We just have a lot of things to continue to work on."

The heat index reached 107-degrees Sunday after starting out at 96-degrees when the team reached the field at 9:20 a.m

Tulsa will be on the field again Monday morning for the fifth preseason practice before taking a day off from practicing Tuesday for Media Day.
