Poor shooting and turnovers were Tulsa's nemesis Saturday afternoon as the Tulane Green Wave pulled away for a 71-47 victory over the Golden Hurricane in front of 377 fans at the Donald W. Reynolds Center. Tulsa fell to 6-12 overall and 3-4 in league action, while Tulane improved to 13-5 and 4-2 in the American Athletic Conference.

Tulsa freshman Tyjae' Scales, making her first career start, led the Hurricane with a season-high nine points and 10 rebounds. Ashley Clark, Ashley Hughes and Tatyana Perez each scored eight points for Tulsa. The Green Wave had three double-figure scorers, led by Tierra Jones' 13 points, all but one point coming in the first half.

The Hurricane suffered a season-high 23 turnovers, as Tulane had a 30-7 scoring advantage off of Tulsa turnovers. The Green Wave had a field goal percentage of .460, while Tulsa shot just 34 percent from the field, making only 17-of-50 field goals and shooting 5-of-18 from three-point range for 28 percent.

"We had 23 turnovers that resulted in 30 points for them. The margin was less than 30, so if we aren't turning the ball over and giving them easy baskets, it is a different game.  I am just disappointed with the turnovers and how we didn't play together defensively," said Tulsa Head Coach Matilda Mossman.

Tulane took a 16-point halftime lead and expanded that to 25 points by the end of the third period as the Green Wave took a 53-28 lead into the final stanza.

Tulsa scored just five points in the third quarter as Tulane had a 14-5 edge in that period. The Hurricane totaled just one field goal during those 10 minutes. Scales' layup at the 4:55 mark of the third period ended a drought of 8:54 in which the Hurricane did not score a field goal. It was the first field goal for Tulsa since the 3:49 mark of the second quarter.

The Hurricane rebounded in the final period for its best scoring quarter of the game with 19 points, as Hughes scored all eight of her points in the final period. Tulane's lead ballooned to 30 points twice in the final quarter, 69-39 and 71-41, before two Hughes' three-pointers made the final margin 24 points.

Tulsa jumped out to a 6-2 lead to start the game, but Tulane scored the next seven points for a 9-6 lead. After the score was tied at 12 with 1:09 remaining in the first quarter, the Green Wave went on a 7-0 run to take a 19-12 lead with just under a minute gone in the second period.

Tatyana Perez's three-pointer at the 8:55 mark cut the Tulane lead to 19-15. Ashley Clark's layup at the 3:49 mark put Tulsa behind Tulane by just two points, 24-22, but that's as close as the Hurricane would get the remainder of the game. From that point, the Green Wave outscored the Hurricane 15-1 in the final 3:31, including scoring 13 straight points, to take a 39-23 halftime lead.

Tulane's Jones had 12 first-half points for game-high scoring honors, while Tulsa's Scales had seven points and six rebounds to lead the Hurricane. Tulane shot 48-percent from the field, while Tulsa connected on 41-percent of its field goals. The Green Wave outscored Tulsa off turnovers 18-5 in the first 20 minutes.

Tulsa takes to the road for a Wednesday night game at Houston. Tulsa returns to the Reynolds Center for two straight home games against Memphis (Jan. 23) and No.1-ranked UConn (Jan. 27).
