GAME BOX SCORE
The University of Tulsa softball team used a pair of big offensive innings, including a grand slam by senior Jocelyn Sheffield, and a complete-game outing from freshman pitcher Ellie Reaves to defeat Penn State, 11-4, Saturday afternoon at the FAU Kick-Off Classic at FAU Stadium.
The Golden Hurricane (3-0) totaled 10 hits, including a 3-for-4 performance from senior Jodi Edmiston. Sheffield's grand slam – the first of her career and her second home run of the season, came in the bottom of the fifth inning that extended the lead to 11-4.
Reaves (1-0) struck out four, and allowed three earned runs on 10 hits in her first collegiate outing.
Tulsa scored six runs in the bottom of the first inning, to take a 6-2 lead after the Nittany Lions (1-3) scored twice in the top of the first. Freshmen Morgan Neal and Julia Hollingsworth hit RBI singles around an RBI fielder's choice by senior Catherine Horner in the inning. Junior Maddie Withee capped the big frame with a two-run triple.
Senior Jodi Edmiston gave the Hurricane an insurance run in the second with an RBI double, scoring junior Maggie Withee. After Penn State picked up single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to cut the lead to 7-4, TU responded with four runs in the bottom of the fifth on Sheffield's grand slam.
The Golden Hurricane plays late Saturday night against FAU.
