Tulsa Softball Closes out Weekend with 10-1 Win Over UTSA

Tulsa closed out the UTSA Classic this weekend with a 10-1 run-rule game over host UTSA at Roadrunner Stadium Sunday afternoon. The Hurricane improved its record to 8-2 after two weeks of the season. Tulsa went 5-0 this weekend with wins over Virginia, North Dakota, Texas A&M-CC and twice against the host Roadrunners.

Caitlin Sill pitched a two-hitter, allowing UTSA's only run to come on a Kaley Pyles home run for a 1-0 Roadrunner lead in the bottom of the second inning.

Tulsa bats came alive in the top of the third with four runs on five hits, while three UTSA errors kept the inning alive for the Hurricane. Kaitlin Allen singled to shortstop to start the inning, while Brittan Walker reached on a fielder's choice. Allen scored on Jodi Edmiston's single to left field, while Walker also scored on a fielding error.

Morgan Neal scored on a single by Maddie Withee, and Withee's sister, Maggie, scored on an error by the UTSA first baseman. Tulsa ended the inning with a fly-out and groundout, but not before taking a 4-1 lead.

UTSA went 3-up, 3-out in the bottom of the third inning, while Tulsa did the same in the top of the fourth. Sill threw her second straight 3-up, 3-down inning against the Roadrunners.

With one-out in the top of the fifth inning, Tulsa went on to score four runs on four hits as Edmiston started the rally with a single. Neal reached on an error with Edmiston advancing to third base. Horner's single scored Edmiston, and with two outs, Jocelyn Sheffield cleared the bases for three runs with her fourth home run of the season.

In the bottom of the fifth, Sill pitched her third straight inning hitless inning as the Hurricane went into the top of the sixth with an 8-1 lead.

Tulsa added two runs in the top of the sixth as reserves Tori Stafford and Lauren Lomax scored for a 10-1 Tulsa lead entering the bottom of the sixth. UTSA managed one hit, but Sill got the final two batters to each foul out to end the game after six innings.

Tulsa will play five games next weekend at the University of Texas Invitational, beginning with Friday game against Weber State (9 am) and Texas (2:30 pm). The Hurricane will play Texas again on Saturday (10 am) and Abilene Christian (3 pm), before closing out the tournament against Illinois at 12 noon on Sunday.
