Tulsa Athletes Selected for NCAA Outdoor Track & Field West Preliminary

Four Golden Hurricane male athletes – Marc Scott, Luke Traynor, Ben Preisner and Bailey Stewart – freshman sprinter Aaliyah Birmmingham, distance runner Stacie Taylor and the 4x400-meter relay team will compete at the 2017 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field West Preliminary Round, Thursday-Saturday, May 25-27, at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin, Texas.

Scott has qualified for the 5,000 and 10,000-meter runs, while Traynor will also represent Tulsa in the 10,000m. The 10,000m takes place at 9:40 p.m. on Thursday, May 25, and the 5,000m is Saturday, May 27 at 8:45 p.m. Preisner will compete in the men's 3,000m steeplechase on Friday, May 26 at 9:00 p.m. Stewart will kick it off for Tulsa's male athletes, as the 400m will take place on Thursday at 7:45 p.m.

For the women, Birmmingham will race in the 100m Thursday, May 25 at 6:30 p.m., while Taylor races Friday, May 26 at 8:20 p.m. in the 3,000m steeplechase. The team of Birmmingham, Kiara Jones, Candalyn Lyons and Breonna Hall competes in the 4x400-meter relay on Saturday, May 26, at 9:25 p.m., in the next-to-last race of the preliminary round.

A 12-time conference champion and 7-time All-American, Scott has the best collegiate 10,000m qualifying time in the West Preliminary Round with a time of 28:07.97 and the fourth-best time among the participants in 5,000m with a time of 13:37.45. A week ago, Scott claimed the American Athletic Conference title in the 1,500m and finished second to Traynor in the 5,000m.

Scott finished as the national runner-up in the 5,000m at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships in early March, while Traynor placed 13th at last year's NCAA Outdoor 10,000-meter run to earn second-team All-America honors.

Preisner took home third-place at The American last week with a 3,000m steeplechase time of 9:22.63, while Stewart also took home a third-place performance in the 400m with a time of 47.12 at the conference meet. The women's 4x400m relay team clocked a third-place time in the American Athletic Conference Championships with a time of 10:29.13, while Taylor placed third in the 3,000m steeplechase and Birmmingham finished in sixth-place in the 100 meters.

Athletes who rank among the top 48 in their respective event earned berths into the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds. The best 24 relay times also advanced to NCAA prelims. Athletes with the top 12 times/marks and the best 12 relay teams at both the East and West Preliminary Rounds sites will advance to the 2017 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon, June 7-10.
