Tulsa Track Athletes Begin Competition at 2017 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field West Preliminary Round on Thursday

AUSTIN, Texas –– Four Golden Hurricane track & field athletes begin competition on the first day of the 2017 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field West Preliminary Round, which runs Thursday-Saturday, May 25-27, at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin, Texas.

Aaliyah Birmmingham will get things started for Tulsa in the women's 100-meters Thursday at 6:30 p.m., while Bailey Stewart is next up when he participates in the men's 400m run at 7:45 p.m.

Marc Scott and Luke Traynor will be two of the favorites in the 10,000-meter run that takes place at 9:40 p.m., Thursday. A seven-time All-American, Scott has the best collegiate 10,000m qualifying time in the West Preliminary Round with a time of 28:07.97. Traynor placed 13^th at last year's NCAA Outdoor 10,000-meter run to earn second-team All-America honors.

On Friday, Stacie Taylor and Benjamin Preisner will race in their respective 3,000-meter steeplechase events. Taylor races at 8:20 p.m., while the men's race is scheduled for 9:00 p.m.

Scott will compete in his second event on Saturday when he participates in the 5,000m with an 8:45 p.m. start time. Scott enters the race with the fourth-best time among the participants in 5,000m with a time of 13:37.45, and finished as the national runner-up in the 5,000m at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships earlier this year.

The women's 4x400-meter relay team of Aaliyah Birmmingham, Kiara Jones, Candalyn Lyons and Breonna Hall will race at 9:25 p.m. Saturday, in the next-to-last race of the preliminary round.

Athletes with the top 12 times/marks and the best 12 relay teams at both the East and West Preliminary Rounds sites will advance to the 2017 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon, June 7-10.
