University of Tulsa track & field student-athlete Kirk Smith was named to the 2017 Academic All-America® Division I Track & Field/Cross Country first team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Smith's academic honor marks the 68th time that a Tulsa student-athlete has earned CoSIDA Academic All-America honors, and the 28th time for a first-team selection.

Smith completed his athletic career at Tulsa with perfect 4.00 grade point average, thus earning President's List honors for eight semesters.

A native of St. Louis, Mo., Smith was named as a Rhodes Scholar this year and also was the male recipient of the American Athletic Conference's Commissioner's Postgraduate Leadership Award. He was a member of the four-time cross-country conference championship team, and earned all-conference honors in the 10K and the 3,000m steeplechase during his career in outdoor track.

Smith was an Academic All-District VII honoree, thus qualifying for representation to the Academic All-America team.

To be nominated, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) at his/her current institution. CoSIDA members from throughout the country voted for the All-America Teams.
