
Tulsa Drops Two on Day One of the SFA Volleyball Invitational

NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Tulsa volleyball took to the court Friday against Colgate and Stephen F. Austin at the SFA Volleyball Invitational. The Golden Hurricane lost to Colgate, 3-0, and lost to the Ladyjacks in a five set thriller in the second match, 3-2. Emily Thorson paced the Golden Hurricane with 35 kills on the day.
Colgate 3, Tulsa 0
In the first set, Thorson led all players with six kills and hit .455 in the first set. Emily Hubbard added five kills. Lindsey Ledyard tallied 15 assists in the set. Taylor Horsfall led all players with eight digs. Despite the hard-fought effort, the Golden Hurricane fell in the first set, 25-21.
The second set was much like the first set, as Thorson led all attackers with six kills. Ledyard produced 11 assists and Horsfall scooped up seven digs. Rachael Moore picked up four kills and Ashton Anderson provided five digs. The Raiders tallied 18 kills in the second set, as they took set two, 25-28.
Colgate took the third set, 25-21, behind Alli Lowe with five kills. Hubbard led Tulsa with three kills. Mariah Pardo produced six assists to lead the Golden Hurricane in the final set. Thorson notched five digs.
For the match, Thorson led the Hurricane with 14 kills. Hubbard finished the match with 11 kills. Defensively, Horsfall collected a team-high 19 digs. Anderson recorded 11 digs. Ledyard produced a team-high 27 assists.
Jaelah Hutchison led Colgate with 10 kills. Lauren Sanderson tallied a match-high 35 assists. Peighton McRobie led the Raiders with 19 digs.
Stephen F. Austin 3, Tulsa 2
Thorson paced the Golden Hurricane in the first set with three kills. Ledyard assisted on five kills. Horsfall tabbed five digs and Anderson added with four digs. Stephen F. Austin won the first set, 25-12.
Tulsa rebounded from the first set and took the second set, 25-19. The Ladyjacks jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, but the Golden Hurricane battled back and eventually tied the set, 7-7. The Hurricane went on a 5-0 run to take a 21-16 lead and Stephen F. Austin was unable to come back from that deficit. Hubbard paved the way with six kills. Ledyard and Horsfall collected five digs each. Ledyard added 11 assists.
The Golden Hurricane jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in the third set, but the Ladyjacks tied the match up at 8-8. Stephen F. Austin won the set's final seven points to take the set, 25-18, and take a 2-1 lead in the match. Thorson collected six kills and four digs to lead Tulsa in both categories for the set. Ledyard notched eight assists.
The fourth set was a hard-fought battle and was tied at 22-22, before the Golden Hurricane took the set, 25-23. Thorson had six kills and Moore added four. Horsfall scooped up seven digs, while Ledyard tallied 12 assists.
The fifth and final set came down to the wire, despite the Ladyjacks starting the set with three unanswered points. Stephen F. Austin extended its lead to 10-5. The Golden Hurricane did not give up and battled back from the five point deficit and eventually tied the set at 12-12. Tulsa lost the final set, 15-13. Hubbard led the way for the Hurricane with three kills and five digs. Ledyard notched seven assists.
Thorson notched her third double-double of the season as she led the team with 21 kills and collected 16 digs. Hubbard achieved her second career double-double with 13 kills and 12 digs. Ledyard collected her fourth double-double with 44 assists and 14 digs. Horsfall led the team with 23 digs. Anderson finished with a season-high 16 digs.
The Ladyjacks were led by Corin Evans with 19 kills, while Haley Coleman and Danae Daron added 12 and 11 kills respectively. Ann Hollas led Stephen F. Austin with 23 assists, while Lexus Cain produced 23 digs.
Tulsa falls to 4-4 on the season. The Golden Hurricane return to action tomorrow as they round out the SFA Volleyball Invitational with a match against the Lady Tigers of Texas Southern at 4 p.m.
