TULSA, Okla. – A name that will be forever linked to Tulsa Golden Hurricane athletics was honored at the Distinguished Alumni ceremony for his outstanding contributions to the university as recipient of the prestigious Paschal J. Twyman Award. Mike Case, namesake of the Michael D. Case Tennis Center and the Case Athletic Complex, received the award named after the 18th president of The University of Tulsa Thursday night.
Case, who has been past chairman of the Athletic Committee of the Board of Trustees, is an ardent fan and benefactor of Golden Hurricane athletics and The University of Tulsa.
"Mike Case is the epitome of philanthropy and servant leadership in the community and certainly for The University of Tulsa athletics," said vice president and director of athletics Dr. Derrick Gragg. "Mike is steadfast in his support of TU and our athletics program. He and wife Pat are truly exemplary people and great friends of the university and tremendous ambassadors for our entire community."
Case's first venture with TU was in supporting director of tennis Vince Westbrook's dream to build a world-class tennis facility on campus. Case pledged to support that vision and enlisted additional donors to build the $13 million state-of-the-art Michael D. Case Tennis Center. The groundbreaking ceremony took place in March 2000 and the dedication in December of 2001.
"This was my first endeavor at TU, and it's turned out to be something the university is known for worldwide," said Case.
Later gifts helped fund the Case Athletic Complex at TU's H.A. Chapman Stadium and the Pat Case Dining Center, a gift to his wife for her 60th birthday. Recently, the new Case locker room for football was unveiled prior to the start of the 2018 season.
"When we began the Michael D. Case Tennis Center project, Mike and Pat were so dedicated to giving our student-athletes and coaches the best of the best when it came to college tennis facilities," said Westbrook.
Named the Tennis Facility of the Year in 2002, the Case Tennis Center has hosted numerous conference championships, ITA All-American Championships and NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Tennis Championships in the past 17 years.
Mike and Pat Case's imprint has been stamped on The University of Tulsa athletics and will be everlasting.
"Mike has been a true friend to this university, the city of Tulsa and the state of Oklahoma with his philanthropy. He continues to amaze all of us," added Westbrook. "I am tremendously proud to call him one of my very, very good friends and mentor. He is well deserving of this special honor as the J. Paschal Twyman Award winner."
