Morgan Brady scored a career-high 16 points, while Shug Dickson added 15 and Erika Wakefield tallied 13 points in a 74-70 loss to SMU on Wednesday night at Moody Coliseum in Dallas, Texas.  The Golden Hurricane fell to 8-16 on the season and 2-9 in American Athletic Conference play, while the Mustangs moved to 9-15 overall and 3-8 in the league.

"Morgan is a kid that is in the gym all the time," Head Coach Matilda Mossman said.  "I was excited she did so well, but then SMU switched defenders on her in the second half and she didn't get any open looks."

The biggest difference in shooting came at the free throw line, as Tulsa was 13-of-16 for 81-percent, while SMU, even though they shot just 67-percent, went to the line 15 times more than Tulsa (21-of-31).  The other discrepancy was offensive rebounds, with SMU having a 21-7 lead.

"Offensively when they came back on us, we didn't fight through adversity," Mossman said.  "We had a 15-point lead and when they came back, mostly at the free throw line, we didn't adjust."

Crystal Polk pulled down a team-best eight rebounds, while Wakefield had seven assists and two steals, and Kendrian Elliott and Jasmine Butler each had two blocks.

SMU had a 45-31 lead in rebounds, a 7-4 advantage in blocks and a 7-5 edge in steals, while both teams had 14 assists.

In the first 20 minutes, Tulsa shot an impressive 53-percent from the field, including 58-percent from behind the arc, and was 66-percent from the free throw line, while SMU was 44-percent from the field, 50-percent from three-point range and 62-percent at the charity stripe.

Both teams came out in the third quarter and shot over 40-percent from the field, but neither team hit a three-pointer.  In the final frame TU shot just 20-percent from the field, while SMU was 23-percent.

After going 7-of-12 from three-point range in the first half, TU missed all nine attempts in the final 20 minutes.

Tulsa has a 14-8 lead in points off the bench and an 11-6 advantage in fast break points, but SMU had a 30-26 lead in points in the paint, a 24-10 advantage in second chance points and a 14-12 lead in points off turnovers.

After a tied score (8-8) at the 6:49 mark, SMU went on a 9-3 run to take a 17-11 lead with 4:03 on the clock of the first quarter.  Brady led the Hurricane charge to tie the contest at 19-all at the 1:08 mark, and then hit a three-pointer before TU ended the first frame with a 22-21 lead.  After just the first 10 minutes Brady had 11 points.

Tulsa maintained the lead the entire second quarter, owning a 35-30 lead with just 3:44 left to play in the frame and taking a 43-32 advantage into the break.  Brady hit her third three-pointer at the 4:55 mark to give her a career-high of 16 points with nearly 25 minutes still to play in the contest, while Dickson was also in double figures with 11 at the end of the quarter.

Tulsa climbed to a 14-point lead, 55-41, at the 4:52 mark of the third quarter as Wakefield scored on a layup, and then after the media timeout she added the and-one after being fouled on her way to the basket for a 15-point margin.  The Mustangs closed out the frame with a 14-6 run to close the gap to just seven points, 62-55.

SMU cut their deficit to just one point, 64-63, at the 5:14 mark as they outscored TU, 8-2, in the first five minutes of the final frame.

A McKenzie Adams bucket at the 3:40 mark put SMU up, 65-64, but a layup by Dickson put TU back on top.  There were three lead changes and two tied scores in the final four minutes of the contest as the Mustangs came out on top by four.

SMU was led by McKenzie Adams with 28 points, while Johnasia Cash had 18 points and 13 rebounds.

Tulsa will return to action against Houston on Saturday, February 10.  Game time is set for 2:00 pm at the Donald W. Reynolds Center.  The TU-UH game will be part of National Girls and Women in Sports Day and for more information CLICK HERE.
